• Trump freezes federal hiring
President Trump issued an executive order Monday freezing federal hiring. The hiring freeze excludes national security employees. A hiring freeze was included in the Trump presidential campaign’s “Contract with the American Voter.” It was the second of six measures “to clean up the corruption and special interest collusion in Washington, D.C.” and part of his “100-day action plan to Make America Great Again.” The plan excludes the “military, public safety, and public health.” ... In 1982, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) examined hiring freezes imposed by former presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan and determined that was not an effective strategy. Hiring freezes have “little effect on Federal employment levels,” the GAO said. The report said the freezes “disrupted agency operations, and in some cases, increased costs to the Government.”
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2017/01/23/trump-freezes-federal-hiring/
Doesn't this go counter to providing American jobs?
Well I guess I can just toss my fucking BOP application in a fire. I had a damn good shot at being hired by March according to who I talked to in the system. I wonder how long this dumb shit lasts, because those last two paragraphs make it worse.
Doesn't this go counter to providing American jobs?
- Job creation - Federal spending reduction Pick one.
Well, I guess I was right to decide not to go into the forest service a couple years back.
This really cuts into my plan to become a secret agent. I can't imagine the IMF gets out of this unscathed.
This really cuts into my plan to become a secret agent. I can't imagine the IMF gets out of this unscathed.
Maybe Russia can hire you.
- Job creation - Federal spending reduction Pick one.
Both were promised iirc though
I had a friend who's HR contact in the government delayed several interviews to get him signed up before this - many agencies saw this coming and grabbed talent.
Wait, so just how broad is this? Does it really affect all non-national security federal hiring? I was thinking of joining the civil service after graduating. Is there any time frame set out already? (My internet is awful and I can't load the videos, so sorry if my questions are answered in those.)
- Job creation - Federal spending reduction Pick one.
Nah, all he has to do is cut taxes and the economy will suddenly enter turbo growth and create millions of jobs /s
The state doesn't produce anything
It provides jobs though and is a significant factor in creating jobs, as governments like FDR's proved.
The state doesn't produce anything
STEHEN BLEIBEN You're going to call every fucking economist or economics student on this forum and cause a shitshow Abstain pls
- Job creation - Federal spending reduction Pick one.
Yes, because all jobs in the USA are federal jobs.
The state doesn't produce anything
Do you know what the service industry is?
The state doesn't produce anything
Do the advanced materials and methods developed by state-sponsored research efforts not count as anything produced?
Yes, because all jobs in the USA are federal jobs.
A lot of really good jobs are federal jobs.
The plan excludes the “military, public safety, and public health.”
If this includes civilian military jobs then phew my application is safe

I was just finalizing my application as a legal assistant to the DOJ in Washington. Welp, back to the drawing board.
STEHEN BLEIBEN You're going to call every fucking economist or economics student on this forum and cause a shitshow Abstain pls
He's right though, from a certain point of view. Employees in the federal bureaucracy are paid a wage made up of bits of other people's wages. That's not production, that's parasitic.
He's right though, from a certain point of view. Employees in the federal bureaucracy are paid a wage made up of bits of other people's wages. The economic problems we have in the Western world are not caused by a lack of production. We have more than enough stuff to go around; it's just a matter of agreeing on how to get it to the right places.
Doesn't this go counter to providing American jobs?
It goes with the Republican ideology of keeping government small
It goes with the Republican ideology of keeping government small
"Republican ideology of keeping government small." Hard to keep myself from laughing out loud in public. In practice they haven't remotely cared about that since Nixon and Reagan in particular. And if Trump's tax policies and whatnot go in as planned it'll add a lottttttta debt, good fiscal responsibility! [sp]of course with actual budget cuts that number will shrink. But we haven't heard much policy on that and freezing federal hiring is a drop in the bucket, a pretty dumb drop tho.[/sp]

[editline]23rd January 2017[/editline]
It goes with the Republican ideology of keeping government small
where are those defense cuts then
Lol okay they're just going to hire more federal contractors instead and I can assure you that we cost a lot more than what simply hiring more federal workers would.
Lol okay they're just going to hire more federal contractors instead and I can assure you that we cost a lot more than what simply hiring more federal workers would.
not to mention the actual workers getting paid less.

I'd love to chat about it though so PM me if you ever feel like reading a wall of text. On topic, the exclusions Trump chose to make are really interesting. I doubt his partisan colleagues would be so lenient in this matter. He doesn't have any reason to throw a bone to the left either being as this is an executive order. I wonder what his plan is supposed to be here.
Freezing federal hiring seems really weird when you're about to go through thousands of political appointments yourself.
Thousands?
Thousands?
Thousands
Yes, because all jobs in the USA are federal jobs.
All jobs in the US are not US federal jobs, but all US federal jobs are jobs in the US
