I would take literally any other final fantasy character over cloud (gabranth pls), but considering that he's the character that EVERYONE knows, it would be weird if it was anyone else

Nothing Smash 4 related will bring back the feeling of what it was like when Brawl came out. I'm actually kind of irritated about it. Why can't I be hyped for Cloud? Well, if Snake was playable back in '08, why should I?

Im surprised they added Cloud at all, i wouldn't have pictured Square-Enix to use jerkish tactics in the attempt to promote a game. that would seem like something Konami would do with Snake. no one should be expected to count spinoffs or Kingdom Hearts just to get past the whole "character has to have originated or appeared on a Nintendo system" rule.
Guess it's in their favor though since they did reveal Dragon Quest 7 and 8 at the same time though, so maybe it's something to bring old-age RPG fans back to the table? wouldn't consider Bravely Default as a fair competitor since Nintendo did the grunt work initally and Square-Enix threatened them with taking away the publishing rights if they attempted to translate any more Dragon Quest titles.
EDIT: Kojima is a friend of Miyamotos and probably got MGS on the gamecube as a favor. Snake is in Brawl because Kojima wanted a game that his son can enjoy with a character that he created.

It wasn't, I think it was even the first FF to not be on an Nintendo console.
The remake isn't even on the Wii U (although people are speculating that it might come to the NX).

It's probably gonna be a special mechanic like Little Mac's KO Punch or something, since it looks like his final smash is Omnislash.
Sony really fucked up to let this somehow happen when clearly Playstation is tied to FF7 and is even getting a remake recently.
Not to mention even Dissidia Fans will be perturbed.

Does anyone else think a Smash VS Dissidia game is even possible? Smash has tinkered with more RPG-like elements - custom moves in S4, stickers in Brawl - and Square could have a pretty good roster of their own, if they didn't limit themselves to just Final Fantasy (I'm not just talking Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts - remember, they bought Eidos - they [I]could[/I] put Lara Croft, Agent 47, and Adam Jensen into their mascot fighter).
Do I think it's likely? No. But it never seemed impossible, and now that Cloud's in Smash it seems merely improbable.

On one hand, neat, no brakes on the Smash train. On the other, another swordguy, probably has a counter. I appreciate the Advent Children alt though.

Going by that logic, any third party that's made an appearance on a Nintendo console is qualified. Since we already have a sword character, let's get a fist fighter in the game.

When Sakurai says he wants all the classic video game characters in smash, he's gonna get them. There's no backwards logic they went through in order to get him in game like fans are saying, no, Sakurai asked Squeenix for Cloud and they delivered. The best part is, this is probably unrelated to the smash ballot- he seems way too finished to have been made by (at the latest) october. With December having that special smash announcement, I'm interested in seeing what will happen.
