IT WOULD take a superhero to save Spider-Man, the most costly Broadway show in history, according to first reviews of the mammoth production. 'Spider-Man is not only the most expensive musical ever to hit Broadway; it may also rank among the worst,' New York Times critic Ben Brantley wrote on Tuesday. After five delays to opening night, a horrific injury to a stunt man and the departure of a lead actress, Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark needed to impress. Instead, critics attending the US$65 million (S$82.7 million) production this week are stunned for all the wrong reasons. 'I'm not kidding,' the New York Times critic wrote. 'After 15 or 20 minutes, the central question you keep asking yourself is likely to change from 'How can US$65 million look so cheap?' to 'How long before I'm out of here?'' The Hollywood Reporter panned the songs, composed by U2's Bono and The Edge, as 'underwhelming.' And the story suffered from 'borderline incoherence.' The Los Angeles Times called the show an out-of-control mess 'indulged with too many resources, artistic and financial... The investors of Spider-Man have inadvertently bankrolled an artistic form of megalomania.' The slew of reviews came out overnight coinciding with the scrapped opening date of February 7. Producers now promise the official first night will be March 15, although after five delays critics are not holding their breath.
http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Lifestyle/Story/STIStory_632804.html What a shame really.
i walk past the building that houses this play every day, i NEVER see anyone standing in line there.
That's too bad, it had a lot of potential.
The contracted actors are in a sticky situation
i walk past the building that houses this play every day, i NEVER see anyone standing in line there.
It doesn't open till March? Also, the show is a prime example of people trying to reach beyond their limits.
Surely the title should have been "Broadway Spider-Man a tangled web".
Really, did anyone seriously expect this to turn out good?
I had my hopes up, especially considering all the time and money put into it. But that goes to show you what really makes up a good production.
"With a great production budget, comes great responsibility" -overly optimistic investor
Why am I not surprised?
maybe it will be one of those cult musicals that is so bad it's good.
I walked past it almost every day too, nobody ever in there. My cousin was supposed to go to the show where the stunt man went flying, still has the ticket stub

Everyone knew it was going to be bad. Spider Man and U2 do not mix.

I'm actually seeing this when I visit New York in March. I'm not expecting anything mindblowing, but I think it will at least be fun.
