Tennessee's state Senate Judiciary Committee has approved a bill banning the mention of homosexuality in public schools prior to the ninth grade. Such a bill could derail any potential lessons on anti-gay bullying. The law is the pet project of state Sen. Stacey Campfield, who has introduced it six years in a row.
NASHVILLE - After some convoluted maneuvers, a Senate committee Wednesday approved a bill that will prohibit teachers from discussing homosexuality in kindergarten through eighth-grade classrooms. The measure (SB49) is sponsored by Sen. Stacey Campfield, R-Knoxville, who unsuccessfully pushed the same idea - nicknamed the "don't say gay" bill - for six years as a member of the state House before he was elected to the Senate. As introduced, the bill would have put into law a declaration that it is illegal to discuss any sexual behavior other than heterosexuality prior to the ninth grade. But when it came before the Senate Education Committee, Sen. Jim Tracy, R-Shelbyville, contended current law already prohibits such instruction by deeming it a misdemeanor to teach any sex education that is not part of the "family life curriculum" adopted by the state Board of Education. Tracy proposed an amendment to rewrite Campfield's bill to require the Board of Education to study the issue and determine whether any teaching about homosexuality is occurring and, if so, recommend what should be done about it. Campfield contends homosexuality is being discussed in classrooms. Spokesmen for the Board of Education and the state Department of Education told the committee they are unaware of any such activity. The Tracy amendment passed over Campfield's objections. But then Sen. Brian Kelsey, R-Germantown, proposed to change the Tracy amendment. The revision declares that, after its study to be completed by Feb. 1 of next year, the Board of Education "shall adopt" - as part of the family life curriculum - a ban on discussion of homosexuality in the same language used in Campfield's bill. That amendment was adopted, too, and the revised bill was then approved 6-3 and sent to the Senate floor. All no votes came from Democrats. -- Campfield has been criticized on some blogs this week for seeking a $1,000 "retainer" fee to debate the "don't say gay" bill with Del Shores, a Texas-based movie producer and director who has made films on homosexuality. State law includes prohibitions on a legislator taking compensation for work related to legislative duties except for his or her salary and expense payments due from the state. Another statute prohibits legislators from accepting an honorarium except for travel expenses. Campfield said his request, which came in an exchange of messages with Shores, was simply for a deposit to guarantee that his travel expenses would be paid. "I'm not going to pay air fare to Texas and a hotel, then have the guy stiff me," he said, adding the retainer request came when he understood the debate would be in Texas. Drew Rawlins, executive director of the Bureau of Ethics and Campaign Finance, said he did not believe the ban on extra compensation for legislative duties would apply in this case because a debate in Texas is "probably not part of his legislative duties." Rawlins said there was a "potential violation" of the honorarium ban in the situation as he understood it, but that someone would have to file a formal complaint to trigger a formal investigation into that question.
Source: http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2011/apr/21/dont-say-gay-bill-clears-senate-panel/
So now the teachers refer to them as butt pirates instead?
So now the teachers refer to them as butt pirates instead?
Nope, they can't mention gays exist in any way.
Hahaha, this is hilarious.
I can't see any real positives to this. If anything the biology of sexuality should be mentioned in the classroom, and sexuality in general should be discussed in an objective manner. It's kind of pathetic that I have to hear ads on the radio advocating that people stop bullying gays and using homophobic slurs in 2011.
Oh great. God dammit Tennessee, just, god dammit. "Hey, let's pretend this type of person doesn't even exist until we tell them when they're 15! Surely no gay kids will show up, then, because they won't know about it! And being gay's a choice, right? The whole thing will be like a reverse Santa Claus! With actual people! What the fucking hell could go wrong!?" Asshats.
Title of the article made me think they were banning the word gay outright. Also, does it matter? when I was in Sex Ed is was all hetero and we had no laws....
Wow this is kind of bad, if a student is having homosexual tendencies and having doubt and depression because of it yet does not know it is normal he might kill himself. If the teacher cannot tell him of the nature of homosexuality I see this happening, wow what the fuck is state legislative on crack or just plain dumb fuck coke.
wow what the fuck is state legislative on crack or just plain dumb fuck coke.
it's the south
We should have just let the South stay a separate state.
We should have just let the South stay a separate state.
Yeah, and fuck over every rational person who had the misfortune of being born there in the process.

Shouldn't we be supporting gays? Seriously they are beneficial to the human species. They don't reproduce, so that checks off helping our population problem. Gay couples also sometimes adopt a child, so I guess that's one less child to grow up in a foster home. Gays make interior design choices. i <3 faggots
Gay. I am a rebel.

It'd be great if everyone were heterosexual but this isn't the case. Whatever that bullshit was in California about kindergarteners being taught about gay people was dumb. But this seems excessive.

Wait until a middle schooler looks up the definition then gets this: adjective /gā/  gayer, comparative; gayest, superlative (of a person, esp. a man) Homosexual - that friend of yours, is he gay? Relating to or used by homosexuals - feminist, black, and gay perspectives Lighthearted and carefree - Nan had a gay disposition and a very pretty face Characterized by cheerfulness or pleasure - we had a gay old time Brightly colored; showy; brilliant - a gay profusion of purple and pink sweet peas Foolish; stupid - making students wait for the light is kind of a gay rule noun /gā/  gays, plural A homosexual, esp. a man
was jesus gay? no. so no one should be gay!
Was Jesus a woman? No. So, no one should be a woman! ...I suddenly understand the entire Republican platform.
It'd be great if everyone were heterosexual but this isn't the case.
No it wouldn't gay people are usually funny.
No it wouldn't gay people are usually funny.
By "it" he meant the law.
You don't know what I meant.
Let's play a little game I'll mention a public policy and you decide if it's either A) the southern us or B) the middle east - Sodomy is illegal in many places - Public homosexuality is either discouraged or illegal - Religious policy takes precedent over civil rights If you guessed A OR B you are wrong because the answer for all three was both
You don't know what I meant.
I made that assumption based on the fact that I think you're not a raging homophobe. Was I wrong?
Fuck, I live in Tennessee
I made that assumption based on the fact that I think you're not a raging homophobe. Was I wrong?
Why am I a raging homophobe for thinking life would be easier if everyone were sexually attracted to persons whom they are anatomically more compatible with? I support gay marriage and rights and stuff but I still am of the opinion that the world would be a bit nicer without
You answered your own question. Your opinion is just as valid as the opinion that the world would be better without Jews, blacks, or any other minority.
