First-person view (FPV), also known as remote-person view (RPV), or simply video piloting, is a method used to control a radio-controlled vehicle from the driver or pilot's view point. Most commonly it is used to pilot an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or a radio-controlled aircraft. The vehicle is either driven or piloted remotely from a first-person perspective via an onboard camera, fed wirelessly to video goggles or a video monitor. More sophisticated setups include a pan-and-tilt gimbaled camera controlled by a gyroscopesensor in the pilot's goggles and with dual onboard cameras, enabling a true stereoscopic view.

I got into RC about 2 years ago, then i decided to go higher and try some FPV, i am still a rookie, and there a LOT of thing to know to be able to fly long distance, its a pretty fun hobbies, and its quite expensive.
This is a good video showing how to get started for video equipement.

I chosed an aircraft made for FPV, got myself some average equipement, and ended up to this
Im using a 600mw 5.8GHZ video transmitter, i know i can get up to 1.5W, but its overkill and it just drain the battery way too fast. The camera is an Sony Super Had C1333, worth 30$, pretty good for price.
The plane has a wingspan of 1.5 meters

And this is my ground station, on my Radio, the monitor has a DVR and an integrated 5.8GHZ video receiver, i just need better antenna to manage get a KMs out of it.
The radio worth 60$, a regular radio like this would cost 300-400$, it was a 2.4GHZ, but i moded it to shoot UHF 433mhz for 40$, with good antenna, i can fly up to 20km, and with some soldering, i flashed a pretty nice custom firmware.

Total price for my setup is more or less 600$.
A basic soldering skill is pretty much a must.
I learned everything at www.rcgroups.com
Im still a begineer, but if anyone has question then i can try to answer.

looks like one of those flight simulators i would always play
Yeah, but crashing cost something, but if its not too bad, hot glue is your friend.
Word of advice for anyone starting out with RC flying: Read your local aviation laws, and familiarize yourself with the laws.
Airspace violations are no joke, and can come with fines in the range of hundreds of thousands, plus they hurt the hobby as a whole, as lawmakers see them as a reason to push through stricter laws.

Woops, thanks for telling.
Should be public now
I used to dabble in this stuff
I used a standard small wireless video security camera with a 9v power source. Could fly it within a mile quite nicely. Go any farther it would turn back and white, then to static.
I used it in both RC planes and cars.
Next I'd really like to fit a copter with both a HD DSLR, and a smaller camera to fly it with and could match the frame of the DSLR
Would be SO helpful for shooting video in the air.
My set ups were pretty ghetto though, got the feed form a normal TV screen, not mounted on the controller.
also mounted addition servos to pan and tilt the camera :)
I was also thinking about getting a gimbal to pan and tilt my camera, but im fine without for now.
I am looking for an light HD camera just to record in a better quality, apparently this is one of the best for price

I don't even know what to make of this. Something about radio jammers, and a world made out of alfredo?
Well i just released that i shouldnt have bought a 5.8ghz video system, they have the worst range, NO penetration and their quality antenna would cost like 150$ for both Tx and Rx for so little gain, at this price i could get a 1.3ghz Video Tx/Rx for cheaper, get immediatly more range and penetration, and buy much cheaper antenna later on, 5.8ghz cant even penetrate cloud properly.
So for anyone who wanna try doing FPV, you should go 1.3 or 900mhz, unless you wanna just make some park flight, you could go 5.8ghz, their only advantage is slighty better video quality, much more channel, and little to no noise floor. But its quite useless at range.
Just tried my first attempt in the dark, i should tried to land somewhere else, the sunset fucked with my night mode and couldnt see where i was landing, only a few scratch however.

This reminded me of that crazy Brazilian guy who flew an FPV plane through a busy tunnel in Rio de Janeiro.

I wonder how what is hes setup to be able to control and keep video in such a long tunnel. I guess he is in a following car.
Looked like he needed expo.
Or.... he was flying too slow and kept tip stalling (Unsure how flying wings fly never flown one)
Anywho I was wanting to get into FPV but instead I got into 3D 50-100cc gassers.
Uhhh... soo... I guess I can answer general RC questions anyone has too...
My flying wing would stall at 20-23kph.
You could still add a FPV setup to your gas plane, its easier to land too when you are on first person perspective.
Fpv gear is too heavy. When your flying these ultra light 3D planes even alittle weight increase and drasticly change your pull out speed of a hover.
I could tell the diffrence on removing wheel pants, switching to lighter wheels, and changing to carbon fiber gear.
There stuff for that, like.

Thats a quick exemple, but theres better and cheaper
And heres a 1.4g setup

Just ordered a new OSD, with autopilot and waypoint, the vector, now i can make more range without fear, since the autopilot would make my plane go back home if failsafe/radio control loss is engaged.

Cant wait
This FPV stuff is awesome. I've done some FPV flight on my Y6 but my gear sucks =(.
Here's a pic of my current rig.

I've thought about upgrading it but nearly every single part of it could use an upgrade so I've decided to leave it be and invest my money in a new craft.
Despite the 800 mwatt TX the range is barely a single soccer field. I think my diy antennas are really shoddy and installing a power filter might help.
You are supposed to have much more range with 800mw.
Either
1. Your antenna dont work, but you should still get better range anyway, if you want good antenna, you would want to go with the IBcrazy one.
2. The noise floor, have you tried a ground test? By trying all channel combination? I currently use 600mw 5.8ghz, at first i would get around 300 meters, then i tried a few other combination, and eventualy got 1km with thrash antenna, exemple if your TX is channel 11, then it doesnt mean channel 11 or A1 on RX will be best, Channel A1, B5 and F7 on RX worked with channel 11 on TX, but F7 had the best range.
3.Your radio controller may interfer with it, are you using 433 UHF?
4.Have you ever turned ON your TX without antenna?
Ive also ordered a 1.3ghz FOX 800 TX like your, they are great, and will get a Lawmate 1.3ghz receiver, they are the best with UHF along with Racewood receiver, stock receiver that come with the FOX 800 get badly interfered, you might want better receiver like lawmate or racewood.
I will be using IBcrazy helical 5 turn antenna for Receiver and Mad mushroom for TX.
Here is something great that will give you an idea
http://www.maxmyrange.com/
Hmm I'll try the different channel combinations. Good idea
I already know the antenna's are bad I just haven't bothered to put the $ in and buy good ones.
I could also try installing a power filter.
I'll play around with the channel's and report back.
I've bought the cheapest RX/TX system on hobbyking and that 20$ videogoggles that are just a normal tft displays and a fresnell lense in a cheap foam holder. But hey, for a total price of 80$ including shipping I think it'll be good enough.
Its the shopping at hobbyking that kill.
It's all the I needs that kill.
I have been a platinum member for a couple of years now and to tell you the truth 80% of my orders are accessories.
Yeah, then you need Xt-60 plug, no wait, now you need female servo end, and so on...
[editline]10th July 2014[/editline]
God bless the autopilot, i received my Vector and installed it, then i was up for a try, then suddenly ive lost the video signal, i have not tried the autopilot yet, but i have turned it on because it was my only hope to get my plane back, a moment later the plane came back and started orbiting my location.
I released that my video plug was only half plugged in my Vector, at first i though it was a bad solder.
Still waiting on my 1.3ghz video system.
There goes the Vector stock autopilot test

Cant wait to get my new video system so i wont have this video mess anymore.
