Ultimate Showdown Discussion: Grizzly Bear vs. Silverback Gorilla

It is a question we have all pondered, whether it be at the bar with some gents, or getting the beard lanced at the local barber.
The fight of a century:
A Grizzly Bear enters the ring with a Silverback Gorilla.
Here are some statistics for you lads to ponder before making an overall decision:
Let's start with the Grizzly first
Male grizzly bears can reach weights of more than 1,000 pounds (450 kg), but more typically weigh 400 pounds (180 kg) to 770 pounds (350 kg). The females are on average 38% smaller,at about 250–350 pounds (114–160 kg), an example of sexual dimorphism. On average, grizzly bears stand about 1 meter (3.3 ft) at the shoulder when on all fours and 2 meters (6.6 ft) on their hind legs, but males often stand 2.44 meters (8 ft) or more on their hind legs
Over 1000 lbs! That's quite a hefty bit of bear to deal with, especially when taking into account the fact that these animals are equipped with razor sharp claws and teeth designed for hunting prey.
Although grizzlies are of the order Carnivora and have the digestive system of a carnivore, they are actually omnivores since their diet consists of both plants and animals. They have been known to prey on large mammals such as moose, deer, sheep, elk, bison, caribou and even black bears. Grizzly bears feed on fish such as salmon, trout, and bass, and those with access to a more protein-enriched diet in coastal areas potentially grow larger than interior individuals. Grizzly bears readily scavenge food, behaviour that can lead them into conflict with other species, such as wolves and humans. A few have been known to eat humans.
They are designed for killing and eating large, herbivorous prey. Many might say that there would be no difference between a large moose and a Silverback. Let's look in a bit more before we start throwing our chips all in...
Now on to the Silverback
Gorillas move around by knuckle-walking. Adult males range in height from 165-175 cm (5 ft 5 in – 5 ft 9 in), and in weight from 140–204.5 kg (310–450 lb). Adult females are often half the size of a silverback, averaging about 140 cm (4 ft 7 in) tall and 100 kg (220 lb). Occasionally, a silverback of over 183 cm (6 ft) and 225 kg (500 lb) has been recorded in the wild. However, obese gorillas in captivity have reached a weight of 270 kg (600 lb). Gorillas have a facial structure which is described as mandibular prognathism, that is, their mandible protrudes farther out than the maxilla.
Not as heavy as a Grizzly, but can definitely pack a hard punch. It takes a lot of strength and dominance to lead a tribe of 400 lb apes.
A silverback is an adult male gorilla, typically more than 12 years of age and named for the distinctive patch of silver hair on his back. A silverback gorilla has large canine teeth that come with maturity. Blackbacks are sexually mature males of up to 11 years of age. Silverbacks are the strong, dominant troop leaders.
Gorillas are herbivores[13], eating fruits, leaves, and shoots. Further they are classified as foliovores. Much like other animals that feed on plants and shoots, they sometimes ingest small insects as well.[14] Gorillas spend most of the day eating. Their large sagittal crest and long canines allow them to crush hard plants like bamboo. Lowland gorillas feed mainly on fruit while Mountain gorillas feed mostly on herbs, stems and roots.[10]

The following observations were made by a team led by Thomas Breuer of the Wildlife Conservation Society in September 2005. Gorillas are now known to use tools in the wild. A female gorilla in the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park in the Republic of Congo was recorded using a stick as if to gauge the depth of water whilst crossing a swamp. A second female was seen using a tree stump as a bridge and also as a support whilst fishing in the swamp. This means that all of the great apes are now known to use tools.[19]
In September 2005, a two and a half year old gorilla in the Republic of Congo was discovered using rocks to smash open palm nuts inside a game sanctuary.[20] While this was the first such observation for a gorilla, over forty years previously chimpanzees had been seen using tools in the wild, famously 'fishing' for termites. It is a common tale among native peoples that gorillas have used rocks and sticks to thwart predators, even rebuking large mammals.[citation needed] Great apes are endowed with a semi-precision grip, and certainly have been able to use both simple tools and even weapons, by improvising a club from a convenient fallen branch.
Tools! The use of tools could greatly put the strength of the Silverback to a whole new level. The use of tools like that of rocks and branches could greatly increase the Gorilla's chance of survival.
And now for some various comments found all over the interwebz regarding this topic:
1)
Well a full grown silverback mountain gorilla can beat off a lion attack. And grizzlies can win a bull/bear fight like they use to have in the old American west.
I think the gorilla would win, but would be so mauled that it would die soon after. A pyrrhic victory for the ape.
2)
A gorilla would win. Not by much, but it would. In the jungle, the gorilla's natural habitat, the gorilla would have the upper edge. Even in the open, a gorilla couldn't overpower a bear, but it is smarter and it has opposable thumbs to grab the bear.
3)
Consider this, a grizzly bear kills and eats other animals to survive, gorillas eat defenceless plant shoots and leaves, it has to be the grizzly every time
4)
I think a fight would be very unlikely, but if they were to fight, I believe that the bear holds most of the trump cards. If the gorilla and grizzly are the same size, it would involve a full-grown male gorilla fighting a rather small grizzly bear. This will benefit the gorilla more than if there were two full-grown animals fighting, as the bear would be heavier.
5)
Both have powerful canine teeth and use these mainly in threat displays. The bear is more likely to use the canines to bite and kill prey, while gorillas are practically herbivorous. The bear has the advantage here.
Both have powerful upper limbs, but the bear has long claws, whereas the gorilla has nails. Once again, the bear has the advantage to the bear.
Although I hope this confrontation never happens in a human-induced synthetic environment, I would like to ponder what your thoughts are, given some of the information I have supplied.
IF you would like to add anything, just post directly in the thread with your thoughts and opinions.
I will start by saying that the match would be VERY close. Although Grizzly Bears carry an overall lb to lb advantage, the brute strength of full grown gorillas are astounding. Gorillas have been known to put full fledged dents in solid steel armor plating as scientists failed to observe them unnoticed in their environment.
Gorillas are also adept at using their arms and opposable thumbs to gouge out eyes and literally tear off and/or break limbs.
Given the fact that there have been reports of humans being attacked by Grizzly Bears and surviving, I can only wonder how a full grown Silverback would respond to such an attack.
This is the ultimate shoooooooowdown. Of ultimate destiny.
I'd put my bets on the Grizzly. While Silverbacks often have supremacy fights, bears are in general more violent and able to take an ass load of hurt.
Gorilla.
The Grizzly would destroy the Silverback.
I bet my money on the bear man, it's a fucking bear!
He knows kung fu and shit!

Grizzly duh. Gorilla can punch, Grizzly can decapitate.
The silverback would probably have the intelligence to break the bear's jaw. Then he would walk around with the bear on his back and get all the ladies.
Grizzly duh. Gorilla can punch, Grizzly can decapitate.
Gorilla can gouge out eyes, and also has a mean set of teeth that can be utilized if necessary.
Gorrilla, without a doubt, it has a strong mouth and can also deliver a hard blow.
Oh god that looks so :gay:
Grizzly.
Grizzly
I think the grizzly would win. It has so much weight to throw around that one hit could knock the gorilla unconscious. But if the gorilla was in its natural habitat, it might win.
I really don't know. I'm guessing the bear because it has claws, and is harder than a motherfucker to kill.
ITT severely underestimate the power of an adult gorilla.
ITT severely underestimate the power of an adult gorilla.
Apparently Michael Crichton didn't..
Whatever with the disagree. We'll just have to see it happen.

Fucking lol'd.
I think a three-way fight between a grizzly, a silver back, and a Siberian tiger would be so fucking cool. Throw in a walking shark and you have the greatest thing ever made.
Gorillas are pretty fucking strong. Can climb trees like it's 400lb body weighed nothing.

You mean, THIS walking shark?
The silverback would probably have the intelligence to break the bear's jaw. Then he would walk around with the bear on his back and get all the ladies.
He should make a rug out of the grizzly.

EDIT:
I changed my mind.
Bear FTW

I'd say the gorilla would claim the win, though, as has been said, it would be a close fight.

Jesus. That bear looks really really real...
Jesus. That bear looks really really real...
Not as real as the Gorilla that's for sure.
The grizzly wins. He's got the right to bear arms! Har har har!
I misread the title at first as "Ultimate Showdown: Hezzy vs. Silverhammer."
Dear god my eyes suck...
ITT severely underestimate the power of an adult gorilla.
ITT thinking a gorilla is superman
Although I think it would be an extremely close fight, I am going to have to go with the Gorilla. Gorillas are really fucking strong and they have the intelligence advantage. That's not to say a Grizzly couldn't win the fight, but if it was about to go down, I'd place my bet on the gorilla.
