Kim Weaver: Iowa Democrat Drops Out Of Race To Unseat Steve King After Receiving Death Threats
29 replies, posted
Citing concerns for her personal safety, Iowa Democrat Kim Weaver announced that she is dropping out of the 2018 race against Republican Steve King. The two Iowans were set to battle for the state’s 4th Congressional District, in a repeat of last year’s election. In that election, King handily defeated Weaver by more than 80,000 votes.
In announcing her decision to withdraw from the race, Weaver revealed that the threats against her began during last year’s election cycle.
Wonder if Jontron sent one...
edit - Fucking joke people....jesus....
Nothing but class from the shithole state of Iowa.
Death threats... I see the beta trolls males are at it again. I wouldn't of dropped out. If you're receiving death threats as a political candidate forward them to the FBI.

I just wish we could get rid of Chuck Grassley, Goddamn farmers.
A good leader is someone that can handle the hate. Looks like she isn't quipped for the job.

"A good leader should be able to ignore death threats and not be bothered by them." :what:

Hey, that sounds an awful lot like the description of the idiot in the Oval office right now.
It seems to me she's just using the death threats as an excuse to drop out because she just isn't going to win. She lost to the same guy by 80,000 votes in the last election and cites some other reasons in the full article, and never even elaborates on the threats which could have easily been three people on Twitter saying "I'm gonna kill u" in between retweeting Pepe memes. I don't think this is an indication that she was actually pressured out of the race by serious threats to her safety, but that's just my opinion after reading the article.

No argument there.

So this means he'll send death threats to Democratic politicians in other states? Did his stupid rant include death threats at liberal politicians and just nobody made a big deal about that over his immigration remarks, or am I missing something here?
I think you might be carrying around a pretty huge stereotype and looking for places to apply it.

I don't think Trump would go that far personally. But I can see him sending someone to do it.

The subject of the post you are replying to is JonTron, not the President of the United States.

Holy shit i was trying to make a joke....
This is the state of American politics. The people who send death threats have their most preferred candidate in office.
I remember in 2012 when all we argued about was taxes and healthcare. Everything we talked about was economics. Jobs, etc.
Now our hot button topics are about the superiority of western civilization and whether some religions are naturally violent, whether we should ban people because of their religion or national origin.
Our political rhetoric is so fucking dominated by race these days.
I hate to comment a picket sign, but I wish we could just make racists afraid again

These people are not the by and large of the U.S. electorate. Grassley became a target because he's made a name for himself on the Hill, and so him and those around him attract attention from the loud and vocal minority. Politics has always been like this, especially on the municipal level in states like Iowa.
That said, Weaver's decision was not even mostly based on any percieved personal threat. The headline is misleading in this regard, but the article itself hints at this:
"Above this, my personal health is an issue. In order to sufficiently devote myself to the campaign, I would have to quit my job and shift to campaigning full-time. With recent legislation on health insurance, I must admit that the possibility of seeking a new job after the election exposes too much of a risk for me in not being able to secure health insurance."
In addition to her concern that she would not be able to obtain health insurance should she lose to King, Weaver explained that her mother’s health had weighed heavily on her mind. Weaver felt that she would be unable to commit to the level of intensity required to run a campaign, while also being available for her mother.
There are clearly a myriad of reasons why Weaver dropped her campaign. I would caution you against building your narrative around the most attention-grabbing examples.
In an interview with the Des Moines Register on Saturday, Weaver added to that rationale, alleging that the state of Iowa's Office of Long-Term Care Ombudsman, where she is an employee, saw its budget cut this year as "punishment" for her political candidacy.
The office received a $164,000 cut this year — a 12 percent reduction from the previous year.
"I'm feeling guilty that we lost this funding because I'm running for office," Weaver said, adding that she was prepared to take a "voluntary layoff" if the cut requires a staff reduction.
Weaver said she was told by her supervisor of the connection between her candidacy and the budget cut, and that the supervisor, in turn, was told by a state legislator.
typed the internet man behind a veil of anonymity and detachment.
Also politicians actually don't, especially for credible death threats. If you don't believe me, go announcing that you have an intent to shoot the president and see how that ends for you.

Okay? So how does that tie into sending death threats to politicians?

That's about the skeeziest thing I've seen.
It reminds me of our city commissioners, the "Committee of Fifty", or as we like to call them, "The Shifty Fifty".
Granted I'm not aware of them doing anything fucked up politically, but they do pull a lot of the strings here, and they're mostly real-estate moguls, meaning we have jacked-up housing prices. They're also known for not allowing certain things to be brought into town (the railroad wanted a turntable, for instance), because "it would bring in too many high-paying jobs".

Wait so on what grounds does he know they 'likely didn't happen'? Not like he has access to his opponent's communications, and sending weird ass messages to people over the internet is like one of the lowest effort things conceivable.

Look. Who. Is. In. The. White. House.
You need to drop all pretenses of "This isn't what the right supports" because, yes, it is. It's literally the administration that "the right supports".

Punching reporters out was something Trump himself, HIMSELF, vocally professed. People like myself told you how fucking wrong that was. You ignored us. Then last week a reporter gets choke slammed.

If you're a conservative, everything that you don't like is a false flag attack. Your supporters aren't actually disgusting, racist, hateful people, the Democrats are just planting fake evidence to make them look that way, just like God planted the dinosaur bones to test our faith.

Every victim in a mass shooting is just a crisis actor paid to make gun owners look bad.
