Venezuelan politician German Mavare, leader of the opposition UNT party, died Friday after being shot in the head, an assassination that occurred in the western state of Lara, his organization said.
"The board of the UNT expresses its deepest sorrow for the slaying of colleague German Mavare. We demand justice and an end to violence," was the message posted on the Twitter account of the UNT party, headed by jailed ex-presidential candidate and former governor of Zulia state, Manuel Rosales.
The mayor of Iribarren in Lara state, Alfredo Ramos, said on his Twitter account minutes after the incident occurred before dawn Friday: "German Mavare, of the popular urbanization of Carucieña, a tireless fighter for social causes, has just been hit by a bullet in the head."
For his part, Luis Florido, an opposition lawmaker of the Voluntad Popular party, said on Twitter: "German Mavare died. A red bullet ended his life. Politics today is high risk. We demand an investigation of the case #NoMoreViolence #Lara".
The authorities have not yet issued a statement about the matter.
Holy shit.
I highly suspect that the government is involved with this, and if so, just damn. Hopeful that the Venezuelans will eventually oust their current government and put them into cells for screwing up the country so badly.

Unless you catalogs a massive firing squad to all the government (including the entire system of justice) that everyone have in mind I doubt it, since more than one pepole here, not want to see them in a cell
Are party leaders in Venezuela elected by party officials or all members of the party?
Are party leaders in Venezuela elected by party officials or all members of the party?
Depends of party, only the PSUV is only one that this party leaders are selected to finger by President
in a socialist country?? never!!!
because a socialist country is immune to assassinations and civil wars, obviously /s

It begins, I guess.
From what I can tell, he was a regional leader in one of the parties that makes up the opposition MUD coalition, not the leader of the entire opposition or anything like that. This isn't likely to spark a Captain America: Civil War

The way things are going, Venezuela looks pretty doomed to a civil war anyways. Pretty much everybody is trying to jump ship or fight over the scraps of what's left. The whole country is in meltdown mode and literally falling apart (infrastructure is rapidly collapsing). What's amazing is the fact that it's still trundling onwards despite the electrical network, roads, railways, internet, food distribution, and army all being on the verge of total collapse.
It's depressing because this was so easily avoidable (i.e don't try to abolish the market economy, force millions of people to emigrate, maintain a convoluted currency system, etc) but Chavez and his even more inept successor more or less were allowed to let Venezuela pretty much commit suicide. The ordinary voters are to blame as well in large part (back when Venezuela was still ostensibly democratic) for voting in such clueless oafs and the Socialist Party as well.
Jesus, it's almost like a real life game of Junta.
