Sacha bites the dust: Star quits Freddie Mercury film
Johnny Depp is the new frontrunner to play Freddie Mercury in a new biopic after Sacha Baron Cohen quit the film over 'creative differences'.
Brit Sacha – best known for playing popular characters Borat, Ali G and Bruno – was due to bring the tragic frontman back to life in a movie directed by Tom Hooper, even taking singing lessons to perfect his impression of the charismatic performer.
However, he has now pulled out following a row with remaining Queen stars Brian May and Roger Taylor over his portrayal of their friend and bandmate, according to website Deadline.

NOoo!
Johnny Depp? That's not exactly someone i think of when i hear "Freddie Mercury Biopic".
apparently, he also left because the other Queen members wanted the movie to be PG. Like what the fuck, how do you make a movie about one of the most prolific rock bands and one of the most outrageously out there and flamboyant lead singers of all time PG?
dang brian may and roger taylor basically told him he did a shit job at it???
fuck johnny depp doesnt even look like the guy and i bet he cant sing nearly as well this is gonna suck ass

Queen wasn't exactly outrageous...by today's standards especially they definitely fit the bill of a PG band.

Freddy would probably not want it PG himself.

I heard this on the radio too.

How the hell are you going to explain how he got AIDS in a pg film?

Probably in a very tame and indirect manner, like how Pixar explained how Ellie was barren and couldn't have children in UP.

The same way commercials talk about AIDs and get away with it.
Sacha sounds like one of the best choices I could think of. Shame about depp filling the role.
Depp doesn't fit the role at all. He's an extremely overrated and extremely overused actor.

Freddie Mercury wanted a giant penis prop to fly over the heads of audience members into a giant mouth with a mustache during one of their concerts.

I don't know about "overrated," but he's definitely very overused. He's a great actor, but there are many other great actors of this generation who don't receive as much recognition as they should.
I doubt its solely to do with them wanting a PG film.
Theres a lot you can do with a PG film, people forget that the dark knight was a PG13 film, and it had scenes such as the joker slamming a dudes head down on a pencil right through his fuckin eyeball.
Its probably more to do with Brian May and Roger Taylor wanting to do a whitewashed revisionist version of their story, rather than just telling the story.
Dark knight was rated mature 15+ over here

It seems to all be very different.
In PG-13, you can imply anything you want. As long as you don't see it happening, you can imply anything.
In PG movies, implications are far more restricted.
Why are May and Taylor even involved? They should be used to check accuracy and whatnot, but not make the film a PG and completely whitewash music history.
I saw this thread and only got the pun in the title like when I saw it again like half a hour later
Queen had a shitton of arguments throughout their band life, I expect May and Taylor will want to make it seem like they were all one big happy family.
I wonder what Deacon thinks of this?

I doubt John will say anything about it, he hasn't really said anything since he left the band in 1997.
But yes, I was eagerly awaiting this and now I feel pretty disappointed Cohen's not going to be in it. I hope Depp will do a good job of it at least.

You obviously never heard of their New Orleans release party for the Jazz album, or really any of their parties.

Along with Elton John, Freddie Mercury was responsible for at least half of all cocaine consumption in the 70's.
They could get Leonardo DiCaprio to do it like how he does almost every single biofilm in the last ten years.
Catch me if you can
J. Edgar
The wolf of wall street
The Aviator
Do i need to say any more?

The movie requires an actor not a singer. It's a biopic not a musical.

I'm kinda inclined to side with the remaining band members as they were actually there. Maybe they want to whitewash it, but it could just as easily be that Sacha wanted to over-dramatize it.

No, you're wrong.

This just sounds like Rammstein now.
I'm still waiting to see Johnny Depp on the new Fast and Furious movie.
Johnny Depp is incapable of playing anyone but Johnny Depp. Too bad, I think Sacha could have been excellent.
