Typhoon Neoguri: Okinawa Island & Japan in path of strongest typhoon so far in 2014
Typhoon Neoguri, the second typhoon of the 2014 Western Pacific season, threatens to become an extremely dangerous cyclone as it churns toward Okinawa and potentially other parts of Japan and East Asia.
The system became a typhoon -- the Western Pacific equivalent of a hurricane -- on Friday, July 5. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center, in a bulletin issued late Friday U.S. time, upped its forecast wind speeds for Neoguri to the equivalent of a Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale by the time the storm approaches Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands by Monday (U.S. time).
Neoguri may then go on to affect western parts of the Japanese mainland by Tuesday or Wednesday. However, according to JTWC maps, the cone of uncertainty stretches anywhere from Shanghai on the Chinese coast to Tokyo in eastern Japan by that time, and includes parts of North and South Korea.
Fukushima's going to be in trouble again. It's one of the places that'll be affected around the Thursday progression.
Japan can't catch a break.
As I type this I'm laying on the beach in Okinawa, it's 91 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. I guess this is truly "the calm before the storm".

The waves have noticeably picked up strength on my end of the island. The PX has been raided so I didn't get much in the way of food for the storm :v:
But it's definitely the calm before the storm.

doesn't look like it's going to be too bad there
Doesn't Neoguri mean racoon in Korean?
God damn, it's gonna be a CATEGORY 3 when it gets here!? Like we didn't have enough rain already.
Edit: Oh wait it changed to a tropical storm for where I live. Still bad though.
Aaand it's a category 1 again. well shit

Possibly, but this is Japan we're talking about here.

And?
Well Japan is right on that ring of fire... In terms of tectonics at least.
And?
Shouldn't he be asking what it means in Japanese? Since that's like, more relevant to the topic.
I bet some handful of 13 year old bastards will "THEY USING THIS STEOM ASS AN EXCUSE TO DELAY MY ANIME!!"

The tsunami a couple years ago killed a couple anime producers.

tectonics don't really affect storm patterns though
luckily for me i'm going back to china on tuesday. missing the storm by a hair

My Uncle lives in Tokyo, hope he copes ok
Wow, that same storm system passed by Guam where I'm staying. It was only a tropical depression at the time though. Hopefully Japan doesn't get hit too hard, they have been through a lot of shit.
My cousin's in Nagoya, hope he's alright

Tokyo seems to miss most of it

But seriously, I think I'm more focused on why only the first floor of my house has storm shutters. Otherwise it's business as usual here in Kyushu
I never knew there were this many Facepunchers in Japan

I have always wanted to go to Okinawa
I think my little brother's on the tropical storm side of Japan, so hopefully he does alright.
I am worried for my friend who is over there at the moment

That sounds like a delicious typhoon..
I wish we named storm systems after food here in Australia.

Hey nerd, what base do you live on?
I used to live on Okinawa near McT

Reasons to hate Facepunch.
He's not implying anything bad about Japan you dumb weabooshits. He's saying that even if it did mean racoon in Korean, it doesn't mean Japan is okay with naming cities after nasty animals because it's Korean not Japanese. There was nothing sinister there at all.
Doesn't Neoguri mean racoon in Korean?
Raccoon dog, actually.
Edit:
Might as well expand a bit. If you were to Google translate "너구리" (aka the Korean spelling of Neoguri), you would get raccoon. However, this is because what Korean refers to as raccoons are referred to as "raccoon dogs" in other countries, and they refer to traditional raccoons as "American raccoons", or "아메리카너구리."
Possibly, but this is Japan we're talking about here.
It doesn't mean anything in Japanese; South Korea gave the name for the hurricane.

That's Korean too, as evidenced by the Korean spelling underneath the roman letters. Here's the rough correspondence:
너 = neo
구 = gu
리 = ri
