Jilloch, who suffered heart failure at Twyford Zoo, in Tamworth, Staffs, appeared as one of the children in a family of chimps. Their television roles made the tea company one of the country’s most widely recognised brands. The commercials ran from 1956 until 2002, when lobbying by animal welfare campaigners led to them being taken off the air. The clips featured the chimps dressed in wigs, hats and clothes, performing a number of sketches with voice-overs from some of the leading performers of the day, including Peter Sellers, Bob Monkhouse and Cilla Black. Jilloch featured in several adverts in the 1970s and 1980s. In one, the family is seen watching football on television and drinking tea. Another in which she appears, features a bumbling TV repair man who tries to tune in a microwave oven. Sharon Redrobe, the director of life sciences at the zoo, said: “Jilloch was one of our favourite chimps so we’re all saddened by the loss. “The animal and vet team worked tirelessly to keep her as comfortable as possible.” Liz Cubberley, the zoo’s African Ape keeper, said: “Jilloch was a friendly chimp. She was quiet and easy-going.” Chimpanzees can live for up to 60 years. Jilloch died last Sunday but her death has only just been announced. The adverts were inspired by the chimps’ tea parties held at London Zoo in the 1950s. With catchphrases such as “There’s no other tea to beat PG”, the commercials had a dramatic impact. Within two years, PG Tips rose from fourth in the market to Britain’s top-selling tea. Neil Dorman, curator at Twyford Zoo, said: “Jilloch had a lot of character and will be missed. She was shy but friendly. She’s never let fame go to her head.”
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/8069176/RIP-PG-chimp.-Star-of-tea-adverts-dies-at-34.html Tis a sad day
