What do you get when you cross jelly fish DNA with a cuddly bunny? If researchers from universities in Hawaii and Turkey have anything to say about it, the combination could result in cheaper, more effective drugs for genetic diseases.
Scientists have cloned a litter of rabbits which have been given a gene from a glowing jellyfish, effectively creating two glow-in-the-dark bunnies. Under normal light the rabbits appear just as normal and healthy as their siblings, but in a dark room the animals shine a bright fluorescent green.
Associate professor Stefan Moisyadi with the University of Hawaii told the Independent the cloned bunnies shine as brightly as LED lights when the room goes dark.[/quote]

(First time doing a topic here, by the way.)
I hope the bunnies live a full life and not die to mutation or something
Whose bright idea was that

THis is one of the most common things to do, make animals that don't glow into glowsticks
It took me a while to realize that the picture was in fact neither jellyfish nor Slimer.
gene splicing is so fucking cool and yet so fucking scary
Jesus fuck they're bright as hell too.
I'll take 5
If they made glowing kittens that always stayed kitten sized I'd pay 1000 dollars for one.
When do we get glowing people? I'd like to glow. Especially if I could suppress it voluntarily.

the side effect is you glow when aroused. cool in the bedroom, not so cool in math class

You never will. Your genes are propagated all the way through your body. These rabbits have a special bioluminescent chemicals created within their skin automatically.
The only way this stuff can happen to already born organisms is to create a safe virus that can literally change the dna in every single cell of an organism with a modified version of it, and also trigger that cell to perform the changes.

IIRC there's an injection in the works that does exactly that for Type-1 Diabetes patients, using a virus to rewrite the subject's genetic code.
[editline] something [/editline] Took another look and gene therapy is currently undergoing human trials, with some treatments already in use, but it's risky, and not permanent.
That's cool and all, but can we eat them?
How do they taste?
We need to know these things.
How are they not selling glowing pets yet? They'd make a killing.
That would be so cool to have a glow in the dark dick.

It might be possible to target the vector to a specific site. You don't need all your cells glowing.
In other words, glowing dicks are a possibility.

Has science gone too far?
I'm reminded of when they were using glowing radioactive paint on watch faces, and the teenage workers would use the paint on their fingernails, etc, to make themselves look prettier when on dates.
Even one case of a girl using it on her teeth to give her a glow in the dark smile, which, frankly, if I was on a date with a girl, and her smile glowed green or something, I'd be frightened.

It's not permanent because it is overwritten over time by the dna in your marrow that the virus can't get to as far as I know and eventually the body would also become immune to the carrier virus and eliminate it from your body.

I'd say they should take it further

98 percent of people get this question wrong! Click here to take iq quiz!
Can I have one?
Imagine getting like 50 glowing hamsters, and then setting them loose in your room in the dark.
no need for lamps anymore, just hang these fellas from the roof and feed them once in a while!

green energy
So they're actually glowing? That's pretty damn cool.

Didn't that result in several cases of cancer?

jellyfish kittens helps with aids, jellyfish rabbits helps with drugs.
How do they sleep with that bright glowing?
How do I get a glow in the dark animal? I sure as hell want one.
