Government grants £40 million for EV incentives to several English cities
Four towns and cities have been given a share of £40m in government money to increase the number of plug-in electric cars on the road.
Councils in Nottingham, Bristol, Milton Keynes and London qualified for the cash.
Ideas including building street lights that double as charge points, were tabled as part of the successful bids.

"The UK is a world leader in the uptake of low emission vehicles and our long-term economic plan is investing £600m by 2020 to improve air quality, create jobs and achieve our goal of every new car and van in the UK being ultra-low emission by 2040."
London has been given £13m and will use the money to introduce charging points in boroughs including Hackney.
Milton Keynes has received £9m to build a centre for providing advice to people about electric vehicles and offer short-term loans.
The town is also proposing to open all its 20,000 parking bays for free to electric cars.
In Bristol, £7m will be used to introduce free residential parking for low-emission vehicles, access to three car share lanes and over 80 fast chargers.
Nottingham's £6m will also be used on projects across Nottinghamshire and Derby.
It is hoping to install 230 charge points and offer electric cars access to bus lanes.
The scheme is also providing £5m worth of funding for low-emission development projects in Oxford, Dundee, York and the North East.

As I said in another thread, that's 40m gone down the drain then. I wouldn't my money that I spent on taxes to go into encouraging me to drive electric cars.

So the car will pay for itself within a month?

Yeah because fuck air quality in cities right? It's a relatively small investment that will help reduce smog and other things in cities, improving people's health and saving the NHS money.

So places get lit better and people have the option to get electric cars if they want, arguably the biggest waste of money is the £9m centre in Manchester to tell people about electric cars.

Electric cars don't go as fast as normal cars do.
Electric cars don't go as fast as normal cars do.
... okay?
Not sure why speed matters while driving in the city

I have seen some parking spaces in Milton Keynes go for £2 an hour. It's pretty crazy

the real question here is why were you parking in Milton Keynes instead of fleeing to get away from that fucking god forsaken shithole

I have only been a couple of times, didn't seem that bad compared to Derby.

It's not THAT bad

It just isn't good
the problem with electric cars is that because folk don't take it seriously, the infrastructure isn't there. when it is, they'll be more common.
edinburgh uni have bought a few of these electric vans for their mail service and i think the council have done it as well. it makes sense at a point, but they need initial investment

This is not true, though?

?
Though it does begin to suffer at max speed. That can be altered.
Awesome news
Nottingham, Bristol, Milton Keynes and London
of course it's those places, I mean where else would the most pollution be, and the air quality lowest? Meanwhile every northern town I can think of is festering away, local businesses collapsing and our motorway lights switched off to save electricity.

Tesla S would like a word with you.

Look, I love the model S as much as the next guy, but it's far from an economical car that anyone can buy and afford. To use it as a representative of the average EV is just as disingenuous as using a Bugatti Veyron as a representative of sports cars like a chevy camaro because "sports car".

"Electric cars aren't fast" is disproven by the existence of the Model S. It'd be like saying "Gas cars aren't fast" and pointing at a tin lizzie.

Not what I'm saying at all. Can electric cars be fast? Absolutely. Is your average EV as fast as your average gas powered car? No. The reason: Fast EVs are still out of the price range of your average consumer. Will that change in the future? Of course.
Context is key.
not to mention that electric cars being slightly slower means essentially dick all to 99% of all drivers on the road
oh NO I CAN'T DRIVE TO MY WORKPLACE IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AT 90MPH FUCK
Electric cars don't go as fast as normal cars do.
When the speed limit in urban areas is 30mph, yes they do.
And when motorways are limited to 70mph (although most people do 80) they still are.

That's what kikomia was saying, and is what OvB was disputing. kikomia was saying that electric cars can never be as fast as gas cars so investing in EV is a waste of money, which is utter horse shit.

I mean, I could also say that "petrol cars are shit" while pointing at Toyota Prius or UAZ or something.
The Model S was also the best selling EV last year.
My point is that they're easily capable of being quick. Most manufacturers choose not to in order to maintain the stigma againsts them. Most regular dealers struggle to sell electric cars. EVs are compliance vehicles to most manufacturers, so they're not required to make them fun or exciting. Just toss a forklift motor in our cheapest hatchback and put a few hundred of them in the back of our dealerships so we meet California/European regulations.

Tesla Model III is gonna be about 35'000, which puts it in reach of the middle class. By the time I've got the income to afford a new car, Tesla will probably be in my budget
The future is exciting

I don't think manufacturers WANT to maintain the stigma against them, but more like the stigma against them means that manufacturers won't pump as much money into R&D as they do technology they know will be easily accepted, thus resulting in crappy EVs that drive the stigma. It's a never ending cycle, and only manufacturers like Tesla, who actually put the money into R&D will see good returns on their investments.
