US senator wants to boycott 2014 olympics if Russia gives Snowden asylum
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) suggested in an interview with The Hill Tuesday that the United States should boycott the 2014 Olympics if Russia grants asylum to Edward Snowden.
Russia is set to host the games in 2014, in the coastal city of Sochi.
"I would. I would just send the Russians the most unequivocal signal I could send them," in response to a question from the newspaper about whether he would support a boycott.
"At the end of the day, if they grant this guy asylum it's a breach of the rule of law as we know it and is a slap in the face to the United States," Graham told The Hill.
Edward Snowden applied for temporary asylum in Russia on Tuesday, according to his lawyer. The NSA leaker has been holed up in the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport since he flew in from Hong Kong on June 23.
The U.S. has only boycotted the Olympics once before: during the 1980 Moscow Olympics, in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
The Soviet Union organized a boycott of the Los Angeles Olympics four years later.
Cool, everyone else will just carry on doing what they're currently doing and then the US ends up looking like that fat kid who stays indoors on a sunny day because someone made a joke he didn't like.
Fatty.
Reading the title
"I wonder which Republican said that?"
We'll just boycott you instead.
the olympics should be somewhere else, but because of russia's blatant persecution of gay people, not because of granting snowden asylum
This is so depressing
He sure showed his country's number one geopolitical foe what for!

I was under the impression that the Olympics were meant to be politics free, but yeah the persecution of gay people should be the reason for boycotting.
If they didn't cancel the Nazi Germany Olympic games because of the Nazis, they're not going to cancel the Russian Olympics just because of your temper tantrum about a guy who told everybody about the crazy shit you were doing.

Politics free, take it from the IOC:
"okay we need as much cash as we can, fuck wrestling lets add GOLF"

They are actually making the right moves in the Winter Olympics, they added in quite a few events that were previously just in the Xgames and Dew Tour.
I will not be surprised if these are shitty winter Olympics though, during the test events there was barely any snow and they had to shovel slush for the halfpipe events.
The olympics shouldn't be in russia for plenty of reasons, but definitely not this one

I dunno about that, Sochi is in a really beautiful part of the world.
Oh. Lindsey Graham. The old woman-looking man.
US isn't going to boycott shit, I doubt the US athletes would agree not to go for this stupid reason.
I dunno about that, Sochi is in a really beautiful part of the world.
and thats why its terrible, they're completely destroying the culture, they really don't give a shit about the beauty of the place, the mayor only got his position because he was a supporter of putin and all other candidates got "disqualified"
they'll permanently fuck up that place and after the olympics are done the sports complex's will be never used again and left to degenerate

Why won't they be used? All of expensive sports facilities are mostly relocatable.

there is no use for them no demand
the cost of maintaing the venues is ridiculous and is much better spent lining the corrupt mayors pocket

here is an example of how this happened in beijing, a city which has millions of people as population and yet still the olympic venues lie abandoned

But there is use, sports. Putin would not let Sochi fail, otherwise it means he failed.

If the ski industry is anything like it is here in the US the mountain center alone is going to cost 10+ million alone a year in insurance, wages, upkeep, and trail maintenance.

10 million a year isn't much considering the olympics are going to cost $50bn as a national project.

Except that's exactly what you all are doing with the illegal spying on American citizens.

You guys really don't know what 'boycott' means, do you? Nobody's going to move the Olympics to elsewhere, it's a political statement not to take part due to the actions of the host country.

Maybe by this time next year Facepunchers will stop making these stupid zingers when they realize that they don't actually care what the courts say is legal.

what makes you think I don't know?
this sen. disagrees with the olympics being held in russia. I'm just saying that she's not justified, but there are many more valid reasons to not want that to happen
this sen. disagrees with the olympics being held in russia.
No, the senator disagrees with the US attending an Olympic game held in Russia. There's a significant difference. Nobody is calling for the games to be moved, this is specifically the US trying to snub Russia.
We didn't snub the nazis, but we want to snub Russia, twice, even.
