Israel's other main newspapers carried similar reports, all citing sources close to the talks. An Israeli government spokesman would not immediately comment on the reports. The Palestinians refuse to recognise Israel as a Jewish state because they fear it would endanger their claim to a right of return for refugees who fled or were driven out of what is now Israel during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war and their descendants. Each and everyone of Israel's neighbors are recognized as Islamic states, whether by their government or legal systems. I could imagine Palestine would want to follow this pattern. Although, I do not support any state being identified by a singular religion, it seems people are turning a blind eye to religious nations in the middle east.

But the Jews are more than just a religion - they actually have links to an ethnicity. Besides, as already stated, it's not like the Jews will throw all the non-Jews out of Jewish-state Israel.

Jews however are an ethnic group, and a nation, the difference between an ethnic group and a nation is that a nation seeks self-determination - their own state. That's what Zionism is all about - getting a state for the Jews, it's basically another name for Jewish nationalism and now that the Jews have their own state it's changed into Israeli patriotism. The Jews want their own state which will be their own home, because of the vast history of mistreatment of Jews over the last two millenia. They want a state where they can live in peace without anti-semitism, and without being treated as the lowest of the low, a place where other Jews from around the world can go to if they feel mistreated or even attacked. This is why the Jews in Israel are determined as they are to make sure Israel is known as a "Jewish state". I believe there will be true peace once both sides have their own states to themselves and they'll stop bothering each other for several years, only after a period of time where nothing has happened can the two sides forgive and forget. And no, I'm not advocating removing all Arabs from Israel or something like that. If they'll want to move to Palestine once it will be created, sure, go ahead, but if they want to stay, well good for them, they're welcome here too.

It IS a democracy because there is no higher power than the elected leaders and religious laws are only passed in a democratic way exactly how the US passes laws to appeal to christians.
