Malaysia says highly toxic VX nerve agent used in murder of Kim Jong Nam
VX nerve agent, a chemical on a U.N. list of weapons of mass destruction, was used to kill the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in last week's bizarre murder in a busy Kuala Lumpur airport, Malaysian police said on Friday.
Kim Jong Nam died on Feb. 13 after being assaulted by two women who wiped the toxic chemical on his face as he prepared to board a flight to Macau at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Malaysian police were investigating whether the illegal VX - believed to be the most toxic known nerve agent - was brought into the country of made there, and authorities were sweeping the airport and other locations for radioactive material.

Police said swabs taken from the eye and the face of the North Korean murder victim revealed the presence of VX nerve agent, or S-2 Diisoprophylaminoethyl methylphosphonothiolate.
"Other exhibits are under analysis," Khalid said in a statement that cited findings from a preliminary report from the government's chemical weapons analysis unit.
Khalid said the two women who were paid to carry out the assault had washed their hands before fleeing from the airport.
But he said one of them was suffering from the effects of the chemical and was vomiting.
Airport camera footage released on Monday by Japanese broadcaster Fuji TV shows the moment they assaulted Kim Jong Nam. In later clips he is seen asking airport officials for medical help, and rubbing his eyes and stumbling as he entered an airport clinic. He died on the way to hospital.
Does NK have VX gas?

Well they literally just killed someone with it so you tell me...
VX is some nasty stuff.
North Korea has said the Southeast Asian nation should be held responsible for the killing of one of its citizens, though it has not acknowledged that the victim is the half brother of the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
they're still denying that it was Nam
wild

Well yeah, VX isn't impossible to get. I made some last week while trying out a new way to make my pancakes crispier
VX is not that difficult to synthesise. The hardest part is not killing yourself and everyone around you when you do make it.
Curious to why they chose this way of assassination when simply attempting to stab him to death would probably have been just as effective.

Remember, it was almost definitely ordered by a psychopathic manchild.

Trying to convince a woman she's part of a reality tv series is harder when you're asking her to stab another.

Scare tactics. So far every major attempt by NK to scare the rest of the world into thinking they are a legitimate threat has failed hilariously. It's sending a message that they have a very potent and deadly nerve agent and they are more than willing to use it.
It's scary, but not that scary. They still don't seem to have a threatening delivery system outside of making people smear it on their hands and touch people with them. VX gives off a very specific kind of radioactive signature and anybody who has it on them would definitely be stopped in major first world countries like the UK or US with the tight regulations and security in place.
If they had IRBMs fitted with VX warheads then that would be a very different story.

VX isn't radioactive and can't be detected provided the vessel it's in is sealed properly. I also can't say I've heard of airports testing people for VX or any other nerve agent. North Korea also on their way to a very workable IRBM system.

People have a chance to survive even a brutal stabbing with prompt medical care, but the chances of surviving contact with VX is astronomically slim. Even if he made it to the hospital, the doctors don't know to test for VX, I don't even know if such a hospital could test for VX. Even if they did, they would then have to get the antidote from somewhere, because I doubt even the best emergency room has VX antidote on hand. Most likely I think would be to get an antidote auto-injector from a military somewhere, which I don't even know if they have, though the US Military has them. But even if you had the US Navy deliver it via fighter jet from one of our carrier groups, it would still take many hours before it reaches the patient.
I'm surprised the attacker didn't manage to poison herself considering how deadly and easily it is to get that stuff on your skin.

Also a whole lot more subtle. No one had any idea what was going on both during the attack and shortly after. From a bystander point of view it looks like a mugging or a fight, not a full blown assassination.
A knife attack would be a whole lot harder to execute well(gotta stab a lot or very precisely, both of which would have a high failure chance in public) and fleeing the scene would be very hard too due to the mess.
I'd imagine physical assassinations in an airport are very hard to do if your plan is to also escape.

What do you call that then?
Man, I read about this guy years ago and I read that he was advocate for reform in North Korea, which caused him to get pretty much exiled despite being a legitimate heir to North Korea's leadership. I was hoping that he'd be able to do something someday but damn I didn't expect him to get assassinated so easily like this.

Stabbings can go wrong and are extremely messy. While from what I've read from the article VX seems practically impossible to survive from and it was trival to kill him with it, while not leaving as obvious evidence of the perpetrators.

it was a VX binary attack, so they could keep it on them for a long period of time without getting sick
tho when the second attacker attacked kim, the active VX agent got on her skin and she got sick
This is interesting since that would make this guy the second known VX victim in the world, the first being one of the victims of the Aum Shinrikyo doomsday cult.

I thought that was sarin gas.
I thought that was sarin gas.
It was.
Iraq use VX on the Kurds and Aum synthesised VX alongside GB (Sarin). They apparently sued it in an earlier attack that was not traced to them until after the subway attacks because it was so unusual.
I must say, given their relative ease of synthesis, I'm surprised that nerve agents aren't more widespread.
On an unrelated concern, this shit has been on the front page of local newspapers EVERY DAY since the assassination. Politicians are free to do whatever the fuck they want without publicity in the mean time.
Thanks, NK

This, especially here in Japan. What the fuck does this have to do with us. This is almost exactly why I do not watch news on television or newspapers.
