After listening to feedback, EA kills the Online Pass for all future titles

The modern military first-person shooter Battlefield 3 and a number of other EA games such as Madden NFL use Online Pass. You need it in order to play many of a game’s online features, including multiplayer. A code activates the Pass, which has a one-time use. You need a new code (which the publisher offers, of course, for a fee) if you’re playing the game on another console or if you bought the software used and the original owner redeemed the original. But players never embraced this feature.
“Initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn’t respond to the format,” Reseburg said. “We’ve listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward.”

Sounds too good to be true.
Remember that they wouldn't have done this due to community feedback. They probably saw they weren't making as much money as they could and so dropped it. They have still got a long way to redeeming the communities respect.
Maybe EA is realizing that they need to improve or they'll become the next Ubisoft.

You just went to the respective store for each console and redownloaded the pass file. You didn't have to have a new code to play online on a different console.

They were created as a means of "combating" used game sales. Basically, it locked away certain features of the game (usually the online component) to people who purchased a used copy of the game. Those people could then purchase the pass for $10 to unlock said content.
It was a pretty greedy practice, all considered.

And typically broke things. The amount of people including I that had our ME3 passes suddenly become dysfunctional was staggering.

Considering this and making The Sims 4 an offline game, i can see this being true.
Now I just want EA to make SimCity OFFLINE ALREADY and then ill be pleased for the moment, and hoping that they will continue to improve over time.

what's wrong with microtransactions? as long as it's not "pay to win" garbage, i see no problem with it.

I assume that's what he means. Microtransactions don't bother me at all until they give someone an advantage for having deeper pockets/stealing their moms credit card
