As predicted by the Maya, do you believe that the world is going to end on December the 21st 2012?
I honestly don't believe in this theory, for two reasons:
- How could such an ancient civilization predict the end of the world in such an accurate manner, hundreds of years before it would happen? It seems to just be the end of their long calendar, but I don't think it means anything that it actually ends there. A calendar can't be infinite, and they probably would have made a new one after this if they had lived long enough.
- What does "end of the world" mean? Will planet Earth explode? Will we get eaten by a black-hole? Will our planet be shifted out of its orbit? Again, I find it very unlikely that the end of that calendar means the end of the world, and it's very hard to believe that they could have foreseen such an event.
What do you think?

No, it won't.
No bloody way. It was also meant to end on the 21st of this month.
Guess that fucked up, too.

Except the Ancient Mayans didn't predict that one it was a batshit insane old fart, who also predicted it'd end on May 21st
No. At no point did the Mayans ever say "the world is ending in 2012" nor should we care even if they did, as they were an ancient civilization who lived in a time where people didn't even know where the sun went at night. This "2012 apocalypse" phenomenon is a stupid myth that's gone around in one big game of "chinese whispers" and when it passes, another equally stupid myth will take its place.
Predicting the end of the world without sufficient evidence to back up said claims is silly.
Of course not.

Who needs evidence, people believe it anyway
OH HEY, ITS THIS THREAD AGAIN
Could you please fuck off with this? It's getting incredibly annoying.
No, the world will not end in 2012, the mayans never said it will, where the fuck are people getting this from anyway?
Sorry for being rude but, every time I see a 2012 thread/question pop up (happens about five times a week) I just want to tell the person who started the thread to go eat a dick. It's incredibly annoying that people even belive in this.
No, the world's end is not coming. Not unless people do some major fuck-up.

The Mayans didn't predict shit about the world ending, their calender just runs out. What does one do when their calender runs out? Get a new one, of course. The Mayans just died off before they could update theirs.
Quite frankly, even if they did make a prediction about the end of the world, what worth does it have when they couldn't even predict the end of their own civilization?
The calender for them just ends, not "end of the world". If they could predict the end of the world, but not themselves, how does that make sense? We can't even give a date on the end of the world. We are far more advanced.
As I see it, the only two potential ways for the world to end in 2012 would either be a nuclear shitstorm or the yellowstone supervolcano erupts.
The possibility of either occurring is pretty slim and the second one, though disastrous, likely wouldn't end the world.
Matthew 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
So if you're Christian, according to the bible, you're not going to die.
In my opinion, the media are just trying to brainwash us into thinking the world is going to end in 2012.
Why is it that even though 2012 is no more credible than any other stupid conspiracy theory we continue to lend it a shred a legitimacy by giving it serious discussion?
The Maya believed the Earth was a square. Enough said.
The Maya believed the Earth was a square. Enough said.
So did every other civilization on Earth at one point. And look where we are now. Still, the world is not going to end.
I saw a documentary on the subject with esteemed actor John Cusack. Apparently there's going to be hundreds of huge natural disasters (except for in Africa for some reason) but as long as you know the dalai lama or some shit you'll be alright. I fell asleep during the middle but I'm pretty sure they ended up with the dalai lama.
The only thing I'm worried about in 2012 is that the people who paid for this:

are hosting the Summer Olympics. I can feel the national embarrassment already.
The end of the world would probably be preferable.
Good god, we have so many of these threads that I'm starting to get tired of posting this.
Nope, but there will be some elevated criminal activity I'd imagine, perhaps a riot if the amount of misinformed people is high.

You're an asshole.
OP hasn't said anywhere that he believes the world will end. He simply started a thread for a pretty popular debate and presented some general info on the matter.
Quit getting riled up over easily ignorable things.
1, you're flaming him.
2. stop being so ignorant
3. did you even read his post properly?
Guys i have an answer to this question!
nope.

Mayas did not predict the end on the world, just the start of a new era
i wonder how much money the 2012 concept has made people aka the only reason it's propagated so much
I don't think you will find anyone who believes in this on Facepunch... Simply because anyone who belives stuff like that will find a hard time posting here without a boxfort appearing.

Quite hard to acquire a boxfort in this section.
And I don't think the calendar "ends" in the way the OP thinks it does.
Either way, I still don't think the world will end without warning. We'd have known by now if there was something coming to knock us off. If the Mayans could tell, so could we.

From what I've learned
The Maya did not claim the World would end, but go through another cycle. They believed that the earth goes through cycle's every now and again.
What they do however believed that something will happen on December 21, 2012 though that may change the world.
What they do however believed that something will happen on December 21, 2012 though that may change the world.
Yep: a lot of irrational people will be proven wrong
No, it won't, and nothing make me think otherwise.
[editline]4th November 2011[/editline]
I'll tell you what is going happen on dec 11, 2012: dumb people mass suicide.
And I'm fine with that.
I think they said that it was mis-translated, and when they translated they saw it wouldn't be for another 200 or so years (assuming it's true).
I think that, we're closer now than ever before to the end of the world (some sort of nuclear fallout), because of the tension with Iran at the moment.
