Chinese youth walk with cabbages to avoid crippling depression

The lonely and socially rejected youth in China (read; you if you were Chinese) have done what any lonely person would do, start walking cabbages like a pet.
Why is this so popular? Let's see what one of the cabbage walkers, Lui Ja Chen has to say, "I feel I can transfer my negative thoughts about myself to the cabbage, go for a walk with it and come home feeling better about myself."
Another cabbage walker, Da-Xia Sung said, "I have more interest for my cabbage than I do my parents. I feel it understands me."
Surely though, this habit must make one attractive to the opposite sex. I can just envision the ladies turning their heads as a drag a filthy cabbage down the sidewalk, but how will I know someone else with a cabbage is as much of a loser as I am, and not just trolling for a hot beef injection?
Luckily psychologist Wen Chao was kind enough to break it down for us, "It's not about finding a boyfriend or girlfriend, just about having someone to talk to and share things with, a statement of youth isolated in the big cities."
But WHY Mr. Chao? Why did people pick cabbages?
"The idea is simple - you feel as lonely and as simple as a cabbage, so you begin to act like one and befriend one. And in that acceptance comes change."
Wow that is deep Mr Chao, thank you for the insight on this budding new trend.

I like that guys hat and cloak.
I'm jelly.
Everybody has different ways of dealing with their issues. As weird as it might seem, this is their way of dealing with them. Glad they have a way, regardless of how silly it looks.
what the fuck?
and people call me weird for putting my lizards on a leash
Well then, as long as it works for them i don't think anyone mind.
My question more than anything would be why cabbages specifically. What in the world started this?

Are regular pets opposed by the government or something?

You see it was invented long ago by an ancient cabbage salesman, who was depressed after having his cabbages broken by the Avatar.
After a while he started walking with them, and found they made him happy.
And thus, the cabbage walk was born.
Wouldn't you have to replace the cabbage after each walk?

You have to take care of regular pets. Cabbages are much cheaper.
If I see someone else it's easy to start up a conversation with them about their cabbage, and they are better than dogs as they don't bark, or start fights with other cabbages. It doesn't even need feeding, or leave a mess on the pavement.
In fact afterwards, I can throw the cabbage away and feel that I have tossed my feelings out with it.
Watch out for Vegans though. Fucking pet-eaters.

Imagine if people did this with their regular pets. D:

Me and my best friend: the cabbage.
Do not despair, cabbage will always be there for you!
It's all for show.

Awe man I thought it'd at least take a little longer for people to find out.

How should I put this, the worst place to be a dog is in the People's Republic of China. Warning: GRAPHIC CONTENTS follows.
1.) There are pet dog theft rings that steals people's dog and sell them to underground dog meat market. (http://www.chinasmack.com/2011/videos/golden-retriever-dog-skinned-publicly-on-street-in-shanghai.html)
2.) There are occasional officially sanctioned dog purges. (http://www.chinasmack.com/2011/stories/jiangmen-city-to-exterminate-all-dogs-in-public-areas.html) (http://www.chinasmack.com/2009/stories/yangxian-county-shaanxi-china-kills-every-dog.html)
3.) Your dog maybe killed in front of you if you piss off a government thug (http://www.chinasmack.com/2014/pictures/chinese-police-beat-stray-dog-to-death-in-front-of-its-owner.html)

Have you ever eaten dog? It's not bad, a lot of the street vendors sell it as a cheap replacement meat. I don't mind eating it, but it does grind my gears that they try to charge you for beef when you know it isn't.

So socially rejected even animals want nothing to do with them.
At least plants can't run away.

Thought as much. Nearly all these weird China/Japanese 'culture' stories are absolute bullshit. From eye-ball licking to cabbages, it's all just as ridiculous for eastern societies as it is for western ones.
If anything, these kind of articles seem to have a slight hint of racism in them, but maybe I'm over analyzing things.

Actually it's just a simple misunderstanding. The kids were doing it as a joke because of a popular photo and were just dicking around. Some Western reporter asks wtf is going on and gets a joke answer, but believed it.
