Rumoured evidence of the so-called "God particle" has been heavily downplayed by a spokeswoman for the Large Hadron Collider.
"Only … results that have undergone all the necessary scientific checks by the [ATLAS] Collaboration should be taken seriously," Fabiola Gianotti, spokeswoman for the collaboration, told a blog run by the scientific journal Nature Monday in response to questions about the possible discovery of the Higgs boson, popularly known as the "God particle."
The rumour originated from an internal memo from four researchers at ATLAS, one of several international collaborations of researchers at the LHC, the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator, located near Geneva, Switzerland.
The document was posted April 21 on the science blog "Not Even Wrong," which belongs to Peter Woit, a mathematician at Columbia University in New York.
The memo reported a signal that could be caused by the decay of the much sought-after Higgs particle. The posting led to a flurry of comments and speculation both on the blog and across the internet.
However, Gianotti said signals like the one reported in the memo show up frequently during data analysis. Typically, further scrutiny shows them to be false, she added.
The Higgs boson is supposed to impart mass to other particles and is seen as the last piece of the puzzle to prove the Standard Model of particle physics.
The Standard Model — with its familiar particles like electrons and photons, and less intuitive particles like muons and Higgs bosons — has proved accurate in experiments, but there are gaps in the theory that the Higgs boson would fill, if it existed.
Hunting for the Higgs boson is one of the main goals of the $10-billion LHC, which features a ring 27 kilometres in diameter and began operation in 2008.
This sucks. I was really looking forward to them finding something.
I saw this coming.
I thought the original claims were highly spurious anyway so I didn't even get my hopes up
All things in time, nothing to worry about.
I really hope I will see some drastic change to how we understand the universe in my lifetime
That would be awesome
Where's you god now?
Where's you god now?
Wherever he damn pleases.
Where's you god now?
In your mustache.
God particle is a retarded name.
As expected. I'll be sceptical of any discovery claim until CERN or one of the detector groups releases an official statement.
God particle is a retarded name.
Oh don't bring this shit into here or we are going to have nothing but bickering for the next 3 pages. I was kinda hoping this was true. :frown:
V:v:V
Or are they just saying this to the public and keeping it a secret as most stuff are?
:iiam:

No.
Source on the other article was daily mail so can't say I'm even mildly surprised
Unfortunate.
God particle is a retarded name.
Wah wah it has god in it holy shit when will you retards shut up already
God particle is a retarded name.
The ones (like you) who do not seem to grasp the ideology that got Jesus killed in the first place, are retarded more so than the fanatic fools blinded by the light.
Why do you think people dont like the name just because it has "God" in it?
I dont think the name sounds stupid just because it has "God" in it, i just think "God particle" sounds stupid

It makes it sound as though finding this particle will allow use to all live in flying cars made of chocolate, when it is just one stepping stone, in a puzzle with quite a few stepping stones.
It's called the God particle because when they turned on the LHC, they saw, like, fifteen Jesi (Singular, Jesus) flying off in every direction. They're still cleaning up bits of Savior off the walls and finding robe particles in their coffee.
And if the particle is/isn't found, the media will be up in arms because it didn't allow us to live in flying chocolate cocks.
The problem with it being called the God particle isn't anything religious, it just a bit annoying since it makes it seem like the most important thing we could ever discover.
If a new film was coming out and it was nicknamed something really important sounding by all the media, then everyone gets really hyped up about it, rushes to see it and then realises it's just a regular Michael Bay action-fest and everyone's disappointed.
The Higgs is going to be an amazing discovery for physicists, but for most of the general public it'll be 'oh cool' then 'what was all the fuss about'.
They should just call it the best particle.
Daily mail was the original source wasn't it?
Of course it's bullshit
I personally hope the Higgs boson doesn't exist, since it disproves the Standard Model and thus opens the field of physics for a lot more interesting particles and physics we haven't even got the slightest idea about like the possible discovery at the tevatron.
Bullshit.
Yeah, they're right. It's not a "God particle". But they're learning to create and open stargates to other dimensions.
But to you common folk it just means put back on the blinders and go back to work/home/sleep/school. There is no gods, other dimensions, higher life forms, etc. All there is to the universe is what you see. Live only once. Etc, you get the point.
