Photograph: Yonhap/EPA North Korea has threatened to turn Seoul's presidential office into a "sea of fire" after South Korea conducted military drills near an island attacked by the North last year. The exercises marked the first anniversary of North Korea's artillery attack on the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong that killed two marines and two civilians. The North Korean military warned on Thursday that "a similar sea of fire" may engulf Seoul's presidential Blue House if South Korean forces ever fired a single shot into North Korea's territory. The warning was carried by North Korean state media. Pyongyang blamed Seoul for provoking the attack last year, saying it struck after warning South Korea not to carry out live-fire drills in waters that both Koreas claim as their territory. South Korea's drills this week involved aircraft, rocket launchers and artillery guns and took place off Baengnyeong Island, another territory near the disputed maritime border. Officials said they were meant to send a strong message to North Korean rivals stationed within sight a few miles away. No live-fire activities took place. The North Korean military threat comes despite recent signs that animosities between the rival Koreas are easing, with diplomats seeking to resume North Korean nuclear disarmament talks. The South Korean president, Lee Myung-bak, said on Wednesday he was sorry North Korea had not yet apologised for last year's shelling and that he expected an apology if relations were to improve between the two countries.[/release] http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/nov/24/north-korea-asia-pacific Well, If they do it again, they are clearly fucked this time.
I like how that one looks like he's aiming at the rocks. Trying to get better fps?
Their faces look like they have big mustaches. They remind me of Mario.
I like how that one looks like he's aiming at the rocks. Trying to get better fps?
They are watching their steps carefully. Those rocks are probably very slippery and slipping or twisting an ankle is never good.
I'm starting to get tired of seeing the same damned stories year after year. Russia rattles it's saber at European anti-missile sites. North Korea rattles it's saber over South Korean military drills. China rattles it's saber over Pacific military drills between the US and her allies. Iran rattles it's saber over Israel and the Middle East in general. Cuba stays chill as fuck. Anyone noticing a pattern here? Year after year? Long story short: NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. Nothing ever happens!
North Korea is uncertain.
I say bullshit. They've been saber-rattling and shooting the occasional round into the ocean ever since the war ended. I mean, hell, they say the only reason there was an attack last year was because of the transition of power, and that wasn't even enough to escalate the situation. I mean, if a bloody artillery attack isn't enough to trigger full-scale war, I don't know what will between them! Nothing the NK would actually attempt!
they'll never get the planning permission to build a sea of fire there.
They are watching their steps carefully. Those rocks are probably very slippery and slipping or twisting an ankle is never good.
One broken ankle, and bam, Sea of Fire
This has been going on for, what, a year now?

The patern get's interrupted occasionally.

North Korea would lose, I'm sure of that

[editline]24th November 2011[/editline]
North Korea would lose, I'm sure of that
North Korea really only has one thing they can do: All-in massive push to Seoul and capture/destroy it, then either slowly get pushed back by then-reacting, superior South Korean forces or, more likely, bombed to shit by America.
Its more likely more dick waving, but if the North does do take some sort of action I think it will cause much greater confrontation seeing how the south posted this not too long ago: http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1141913

I feel like a preemptive strike would be the best solution for taking out NK
Kimmy has nukes you know.
Kimmy has nukes you know.
One bomb, and the Korean Peninsula gets glassed faster then you can say Uncle Sam.
One bomb, and the Korean Peninsula gets glassed faster then you can say Uncle Sam.
Well we're still fucked over by a nuke anyways.
Well we're still fucked over by a nuke anyways.
Mutually assured destruction
Is sea of fire north koreas code for "we'll sends loads of half starved troops at you and get slaughtered"?
One bomb, and the Korean Peninsula gets glassed faster then you can say Uncle Sam.
Dunno what the South might have to say about that... >.> It's a M.A.D. world out there but at the end of the day, the objective is to unify the two Koreas once again, not blast one into oblivion and ignore the aftermath.

"Better dead than not with us"
North Korea would lose, I'm sure of that
You're missing the point entirely. Not withstanding the fact that North Korea possesses the fourth largest military on the planet, with many of its soldiers die-hard fanatics, if war broke out on the DMZ, the South (Seoul in particular) would get devastated by thousands of artillery pieces, and the chance of the North using dirty weapons (ie chemicals) is not unlikely. Yes, North Korea would lose. But the South Koreans have the most to lose. In other words, a Pyrrhic victory.

In other words, a Pyrrhic victory.
What makes war so much harder against countries like this is that they have the ability to take casualties, we don't. Just look at Vietnam. In retrospect, we were kind of winning. I mean, the Vietcong and NVA had suffered MASSIVE casualties in comparison to our, although still large, significantly smaller amount. But because every 1 soldier dead makes the populace here whine like little bitches, we have an easy ability to lose wars against weaker enemies. Seriously America, man the fuck up. If people in WWII could take losing nearly half a million troops, we should be able to take losing a couple hundred. I mean, I know its hard, but its fucking war. People will die. My point here is that there's the very real chance that NK could win just because they can take 100,000 troops dieing in a year, but we couldn't take even 500 in the same amount of time. God help us if we actually had to get into a war against an actual world power. We be out in, like, 1 month.
Doesn't South Korea have the most efficient/best military in the world or something like that?
Doesn't South Korea have the most efficient/best military in the world or something like that?
Considering they have conscription I doubt it.
