Oshkosh Defense won a major contract to build the ground vehicle that could become a symbol of the U.S. Army for a generation and will eventually replace the Pentagon’s storied but aging fleet of Humvees, the Army announced Tuesday.
Under the contract, which could eventually be worth $30 billion or more, Oshkosh will build nearly 50,000 of the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle for the Army, and about 5,500 for the Marine Corps.
The contract, one of the largest awarded by the Army in years, is a huge victory for Wisconsin-based Oshkosh, which may have the promise of work lasting through 2040. And it gives the company an opportunity to build what the Army views as a significant advancement over the Humvee.
Unlike the thin-skinned Humvees, the JLTV would have the protective armor of a tank but the fleet-footed mobility of a Jeep, able to ford rivers and cross rugged terrain, while also being able to carry significant amounts of cargo.

The JLTV program has been running nearly a decade. In the final phase of competition, Lockheed Martin, AM General and Oshkosh Defense put forward 22 prototypes apiece to be rigorously tested. After over a year of poking, prodding, speeding, skidding, sliding and exploding, Oshkosh has been selected as the winner of the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) contract.
That thing is absolutely badass.
looks like something that couldve come out of wolfenstein TNO
The Humvee would have been fine and dandy for years to come if the military didn't try to turn it into an APC. You would have never seen jeeps running around in direct assaults during WWII/Korea. Vietnam was its own ball of fuck, but even then we were smart enough to at least try to keep them in the rear.
I've got a feeling that its just going to be a diet MRAP. Not that it's a bad thing. it's always good to get new gear, but had humvees never been put into roles in was never intended for and purpose built vehicles like those seen towards the "end" of the war were built earlier we could have gotten a much longer service life out of them.
But hey, surplus humvees!

Humvees are vulnerable to ieds.
wonder how long until the civilian variant

I feel like it would be a better middle ground between an lssv and a maxxpro than the hmmwv is at least.
the only milsurp vehicle I want is the M1030M1
Wonder what the fuel consumption's like... can't be any worse than a Hummer.
What about the MRAP

If you read the article, that's kind of the purpose of making it so beefy. But it's funny you mention APCs because this new JLTV is actually MORE expensive per unit than a brand new M113 ($330k).

You're missing the point he was making by a large margin.
What about the MRAP
Mothballed likely, the purpose of the JLTV was to get something that was as nimble and could do the same job as a Humvee while having the heavy mine resistant protection of an MRAP. Additonaly, a requirement for this program was to be small enough to be hauled in the back of a C-130, which the MRAP cannot.
Reminds me of the Australian Bushmaster

It does come at an advantage of being probably easier to maintain and less likely to rip roads up if you increase the throttle. Come to think of it though, how effective are M113s against IEDs and the like?
The problem I can foresee is weight. And especially if its going to be offroad, sometimes, it can either get stuck/cause weak bridges to collapse.

They are shit against even basic small arms, so I imagine that giant flat broadside is even worse against IED's. No ability to redirect blast force.
I love it.
Needs gunports, though.

Does adding those increase some kind of vulnerability that I'm not aware of?
You would have never seen jeeps running around in direct assaults during WWII/Korea.
Actually we did do that. We had Jeeps with M1919's mounted on them, M2 HMG's, Anti-Tank Guns, Recoilless Rifles, T27 Rockets. The crazy bastards in the SAS even put up to 4 Machine Guns each on them. In one raid they drove 'em through a Luftwaffe Airfield in North Africa, spraying lead at parked aircraft and waking up every German soldier for miles.

None of the vehicles that have gunports ever have them used in the field, far as I'm aware. Hell, the M231 keeps turning up the weirdest fucking places in the field, none of which are Bradleys.

LRDG raids don't really fall under what you should design your vehicles for.

H-How do I get out of it once it's in there?
it's interesting that originally the N.Grumman/Oshkosh design didn't pass the selection ...
so either they did wonderful job to learn from mistakes ... or I feel sorry for the military :)

Just look up LRDG antics. That shit was every-day stuff for them. The original drive-by was perfected by those crazy bearded fuckers. Loaded all their MGs with incendiary to do more materiel damage.
Gunports, amphibious capabilities, tow missile system when?
Armor of a tank and the mobility of a jeep. Sounds like the thing's going to have a fucking V12 under the hood :v:
Doesn't look all that light, but I'd rather be in that than a Humvee.
I love everything Oshkosh makes, and damn, this thing is cool as fuck.
Glad the Lockheed version didn't win, they have enough of a monopoly on military contracts as it is.
Fuck yeah. These are made a couple of miles away from me and a damn sexy thing to look at.
what kind of a fucking name is oshkosh
what kind of a fucking name is oshkosh
some sort of name mashup from Wisconsin Duplex Auto Company.
So apparently the L-ATV is designed to have the same survivability and performance as the M-ATV, while being in a small and lighter package.
The M-ATV is what everyone thinks of when they hear MRAP for the uninformed.

Too bad surplus humvees aren't road-legal. And they chug diesel like a suicidal alcoholic. And they don't have air-conditioning.

Everyone calls it the MRAP, including in military circles.
It's like the AT4. Its official designation is the M136, but nobody calls it that.
