Empire State Building turns red-yellow for China's 60th
NEW YORK — New York's iconic Empire State Building will light up red and yellow Wednesday in honor of the 60th anniversary of communist China.
The Chinese consul, Peng Keyu, and other officials will take part in the lighting ceremony which will bathe the skyscraper in the colors of the People's Republic until Thursday, Empire State Building representatives said in a statement.
The upper sections of the building are regularly illuminated to mark special occasions, ranging from all blue to mark "Old Blue Eyes" Frank Sinatra's death in 1998 to green for the annual Saint Patrick's Day.
imo this is pretty out of line.
uhhh that's kinda odd
go china
imo this is pretty out of line.
Why do you care?
Blame Obama.
In my opinion the colors look terrible. Communism or McDonalds?
ah hell nah
My future telling powers tell me lots of sensitive people are going to be offended by this.
Why's it matter? Yeah it's a bit hypocritical, but China is a big ally of the USA. If China had an embargo on the US like the US has on Cuba, imagine how fucked it would be?
:china:

How is it out of line? OH RIGHT! That thing called freedom of speech, it doesn't mean shit when it comes to things you don't agree with...

This isn't about China. It's about communist China.

Quoted for truth.
It just looks odd. Not that there is anything wrong with telling China Happy Birthday and actually giving a damn.
It's beside the point whether I agree with it or not. Communism is the anti-thesis of capitalism and capitalism is the economic system that my country is currently sponsoring.
china my ass, cover up for fattie mcdonalds.
I think it's ironic that a building that rents out it's space in a capitalistic fashion is paying tribute to a communist country.
I think it's a good thing. It's nice to show other countries we actually care about them.
ask any american why it's coloured that way and they'd say something like "FOR THE MCDONALDS?"
just like that idiot that said "An early halloween?" when the tower had orange lights to celebrate that the netherlands had founded new Amsterdam (NY)
This isn't about China. It's about communist China.
Not really. Those are their colors last time I checked.

Yes, the country may be supporting capitalism. Does that mean it's hostile to all other political ideologies? Yeah, that's a great way to do business. They're supporting friends. You do know China's a friend now, right? Or are you still stuck in the world of Mr. MCarthy?
China isn't really that Communist once you think about it. They're pretty much a closet capitalist.
This too. China has long since injected Capitalistic tendencies all over itself in order to stay afloat.

Or the other Chinese Flag(not Communist China).

I wouldn't say the PRC is really our friend. More like a Country that has economic goals and means that coincide with out own.

They're your best friend. You're economically reliant on them. They're economically reliant on you. If that doesn't mean international friendship, nothing does. Wars can start between friends that are friends based only on alliances, wars never start between two countries economically reliant on each other.
Also, the other China stationed in Taiwan, is a pretty lousy government.

Just because you're reliant on them doesn't mean you're friends. We differ majorly as far as social policies go, and even though we co-exist, there is still a lot of tension. A real example of best friends is the U.S.A. and the U.K.

Meh, just clarifying that there are really 2 Chinas, the PRC, and the ROC.

No. Not really. The US will never wage war on China, and neither will China on the US. Not because policy is important, because money is MORE important. Just because two nations don't share similar political views means little to the economies of countries. When it comes to China and the US, they are bestest buddies due to the incredible economic tie.

I'm going to have to disagree. We weren't best friends with the USSR during the Cold War, but we would never declare war on them.
What I don't get is why the Empire State Building for this. Using a national icon to celebrate another country's occasion seems like prostituting yourself out.

Isn't that what the Empire State Building does normally?
It doesn't help when the president is accused of being socialist.
It doesn't help when the president is accused of being socialist.
It does for the Socialists.

We were at war with them the whole time... And the key difference is we weren't economically dependant on them. You're missing the key point.
How is it relevant that China's communist? It's just a celebration of a country's anniversary, an economic partner, in fact.
McCarthyism is alive and well, I guess...
