I love that she didn't even dignify him with a response. Fuck me, if he could get away with saying something so astoundingly stupid.
llinois Sen. Mark Kirk is again under fire for making racially-charged comments, this time for questioning the military service of his Democratic opponent's family. During Thursday night's debate between Kirk and challenger Rep. Tammy Duckworth, Duckworth spoke about her desire to be in the Senate as a voice of reason and referenced her family's history of service, saying, "My family has served this nation in uniform, going back to the Revolution. I'm a daughter of the American Revolution. I've bled for this nation. But I still want to be there in the Senate when the drums of war sound. Because people are quick to sound the drums of war, and I want to be there to say this is what it costs, this is what you're asking us to do. … Families like mine are the ones that bleed first." Kirk responded: "I had forgotten that your parents came all the way from Thailand to serve George Washington."

Though Duckworth, who was born in Thailand to a Thai mother of Chinese descent and an American father, did not respond on the stage, she tweeted a photo after the debate of herself with her parents — her father displaying medals of service on his coat. "My mom is an immigrant and my dad and his family have served this nation in uniform since the Revolution," Duckworth wrote.

Duckworth's late father, Franklin, served in World War II and has "traced his lineage back to an ancestor who fought in the American Revolution," according to a 2012 Mother Jones profile on Duckworth's run for Congress.
http://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/mark-kirk-questions-tammy-duckworth-s-family-s-service-heritage-n674331
Man he looked so smug that he came up with such a zinger. Definitely felt like something born straight from Trump's movement. Hope the Republican party can cleanse itself of this type of human trash.

Hope the Republican party can cleanse itself of this type of human trash.
Actually, Mark Kirk vehemently opposes Trump, even going so far as to skip out on the RNC to distance himself from him. He frequently makes gaffes like this; I wouldn't say that it has anything to do with Trump. He's actually a surprisingly left-leaning Republican, although he's still almost guaranteed to lose his seat to Duckworth in the election.
What is even the thought process behind this shit How do you think of this stuff and go "yeah this is an alright thing to say, i'll say it now" in your head
It's the Trump effect
Unless she has been a soldier herself, what does she mean when she says that she has 'bled' for the country? Sounds weird to me. Edit: Yeah, sorry missed that part. All respect to her. She had, indeed.
That silence felt like hours.
Unless she has been a soldier herself, what does she mean when she says that she has 'bled' for the country? Sounds weird to me.
She has been a solider herself. And by "bled" she means "I lost my legs in the Middle East" [editline]13:37[/editline] Fun fact: Both candidates for the Illinois senate this year use a wheelchair.
There's been a lot of talk about how Mark Kirk's stroke has affected him. The fact he's making a bunch of mistakes like this when historically, he was a moderate popular Republican in a blue district that survived the 2006 and 2008 waves make me think the stroke did more than anyone is willling to admit.
Its good that this shit comes out in the open though... the trump effect also makes for more honesty in politics.
Kirk was already losing, then he does this. 10/10 way to tank a campaign.

She was remarkably well composed though, good on her for having the willpower not to kick his smug ass.
do those legs have fucking American flags on them? why is this woman not running for president?
Because she has very little experience in politics. She should at least be a senator first before running. So Tammy Duckworth for president 2024?
Because she has very little experience in politics. She should at least be a senator first before running.
That doesn't seem to deter Trump from running.
do those legs have fucking American flags on them? why is this woman not running for president?
Have you heard her give a speech? That's why. [editline]28th October 2016[/editline] Kirk had an inspiring story the way he recovered from his stroke and relearned how to walk and talk to be able to return to the Senate. It's a shame that this is how his career is going to end.
"Senator Kirk, 30 seconds to rebut."
It's as if they are purposefully incentivising witty one-liners.

Mark drank the water. It's over.
I know you already realize this but here's a picture of Tammy Duckworth for everyone else
Holy shit, why have I never heard her before? A ton of respect for her and the fact that she didn't reply to that zinger at all, and that she's going forward in politics.
I know you already realize this but here's a picture of Tammy Duckworth for everyone else
That isn't a photoshop, right? thats pretty powerful...
She's definitely getting my vote. Fuck Mark Kirk.
Sen. Daniel Inouye's turning in his grave right now.
Sen. Daniel Inouye's turning in his grave right now.
Didn't someone make a similar remark to Inouye at one point without realizing he's a medal of honor recipient?
Duckworth's got my vote. Just have to find time and get to an early-voting station.
Oh if only Duckworth had more experience and was running for President, I would vote for her(assuming her father's lineage allows her to run for President). Well, seems like Kirk just shot himself with a shotgun with that quote, you don't mock people who lost their limbs, or people who came from other countries(unless they deserved it, which Duckworth didn't deserve being attacked for her mother's origin), or a war veteran.
I know you already realize this but here's a picture of Tammy Duckworth for everyone else
That flag-themed prosthetic is pretty fucking badass. Lost her legs and still dedicating them to the country.
Because she has very little experience in politics. She should at least be a senator first before running. So Tammy Duckworth for president 2024?

do those legs have fucking American flags on them? why is this woman not running for president?
She was born in Thailand so I don't know if she could actually run for President, unless she falls under a Ted Cruz type of situation then perhaps she could. Her father was American so maybe she could.
It's a shame that he had to say that. Mark Kirk is the most moderate and most-agreeable Republican that I can think of.
She was born in Thailand so I don't know if she could actually run for President, unless she falls under a Ted Cruz type of situation then perhaps she could.
