4 months of infantry training, then 3 weeks of airborne. 4 year term of enlistment. Ft. Benning, Georgia. Got all my shit packed and ready to go. This is the day I've been waiting for for the past 9 years now. I can only hope I live up to the standards my ancestors have set for me in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
After Linelor, nobody will believe you.
Good luck but.
:patriot:
Vietnam isn't exactly a good example of high standards.
hello linelor
its called army cadets
its not that great
My Uncle trained a Fort Benning back in th early 90's. Half of the men that trained with him are dead already. He's a Captain now.
also your avatar goes with this thread
I wish you luck. May you become a stronger man in the progress.
Why is everyone on Facepunch going to the army is Garry brainwashing us

Do some research. The U.S. Army performed better in Vietnam than in any war up until that point*, in every sense of the word "performance". The Hollywood stereotypes are just that.
*Especially Korea. :airquote:
Why the fuck is it so difficult to believe that someone enlisted in the army? It's not that hard to do...
Also, Linelor was a cock.
A huge raging cock.

I'd believe you (or your uncle) if you said early 1940s, maybe even '50s. But even by Vietnam, the total casualty rate is less than 10%. Nowadays, it's probably half that.
Unless you mean just dead in general terms.

Yeah because when you're shooting and poisoning civilians you only have a 10% chance of the gun exploding in your face.

:downs: What are you talking about?
Only idiots would keep firing their gun if it's prone to jamming and complications, after all, it doesn't just explode without risk signs.

Fun fact: The U.S. was winning the fighting part of Vietnam. We pulled out for political reasons.

It really is strange how many people are joining the army lately.
I too am going to army basic in about a month, hoping to make a career out of it, been waiting 3 years for that day!
must be because all the kiddies want to be in the rangers and live life like modern warfare.

But seriously, good luck there, don't let yourself get down.
Airborne?
fuck yeah
[editline]09:28AM[/editline]
too bad current airborne tactics and doctrines shitty
I'll probably be disagreed with here because this forum is obviously heavily biased towards war (probably influenced by the fact that most of us play war games on the PC or whatever) but you are wasting your life, you wasted it the moment you signed the form. There is no reason for any foreign soldier to be fighting in Afghanistan other than for their own feeling of power and belonging right now. It's not gaining anything else.
People who join the army probably also have some other much more valuable skill which could be put to work, and significantly more appreciated in their home country, such as joining the police or fire service.

What the fuck, 4 months of basic? That can't be right. Are you including optional AIT in that time?

You might not believe it because you don't read any unbiased media or know anybody who's been in the sandbox, but the guys over in A-Stan are actually working to keep the Afghan people safe from the Taliban. That's the entire objective over there right now: Hearts & Minds.

What about people who join the Army in order to volunteer for the U.N. peacekeeping force or to help distribute humanitarian aid. And what about the people who join the U.S. Navy to work on the USNS Comfort or USNS Mercy, both of which are unarmed hospital ships that deliver medical assistance to impoverished nations. What I'm getting at, is that most people who join the Military don't do it to see combat. There are dozens of jobs in the Military related to Humanitarian activities. And even if they do go to Afghanistan, it's not wasting their life anymore then the people who choose office jobs.
