I think they know that, and that's why they're making such a ruckus.
NATO and the west intervene, and ISIS returns to the sands, beginning another guerrilla war that will last maybe another decade. They want to cause chaos, pull people to their cause, and kill as many ideological enemies as they can.

It's not now that they've taken territories from Iraq and Syria that they think they can take on the US and Europe - (I assume) eliminating infidels has always been a goal for the ISIS. The fact that they can't take Europe or the USA doesn't even cross the minds of jihadists or martyrs.
Don't mistake their hard line ideology for over confidence, these guys are not to be underestimated.
The only way these radicals can be sent back to their holes is if other middle-eastern countries and arabs defeat them together. If us westerners interfere again, as someone mentioned above that will only bury the conflict again to rise in another decade.

This is always a kicker for me because it tends to linger in my mind a lot. EVEN IF YOU DID managed to do that, do you realize how many Rednecks and Hunters there are in the US. Even more so that about half them have more weapons and ammo than entire military divisions, there would literally be no place safe in the US if any foreign power invaded.

I'm not ashamed because of IS as a group, I'm ashamed because the propaganda guy came from Belgium where he was exposed to religious freedom and equal rights being enforced, but he rejected it to join a murderous band of racist, sexist pigs.
I'm ashamed because a fellow Muslim, who wasn't indoctrinated as a child, who lived and had a family in the west, not only agreed with IS, but agreed with them so much that he left his family and brought his young son to the most violent and war torn country on the planet in order to not only join them, but to also train his son to become a fighter.
