At least 73 killed in Egypt football violence - Polidicks

They have been heavily implicated in the political confrontations recently, our correspondent adds. Wednesday's violence broke out at the end of the match, which, unusually, the Port Said side Masry won 3-1. As match ended, their fans flooded onto the pitch attacking Ahly players and fans. It is one of the worst football-related incidents in Egypt. All premier league matches have been cancelled and the newly-elected Egyptian parliament is to hold an emergency session on Thursday, state TV has announced. I love how people think this has anything to do with football. Like gathering thousands of people in a politically unstable country is going to end well. I'm pretty sure it started out as a fight about football that grew into a brawl, and then into a political riot. What's really fucked up, though; is that I have a friend down there who's telling me that the military are not doing anything. The one time you need them there, huh?

This is one of the reasons why patriotism in football sucks.
