At least 73 people have been killed in fan clashes following a football match in the Egyptian city of Port Said, state television reports.
The deaths occurred after supporters invaded the pitch following a match between top-tier clubs Masry and al-Ahly on Wednesday.
It is feared the death toll could rise as scores have been injured.
Some of the dead were security officers, the Associated Press quoted a morgue official as saying.
The BBC's Jon Leyne in Cairo says it appears fans had taken knives into the stadium.
Our correspondent says the lack of the usual level of security in the stadium might have contributed to the clashes.
Police in Egypt have been keeping a much lower profile since last year's popular protests that ousted President Hosni Mubarak from power.
Bitter rivalry
Television pictures have shown images of crowds descending into the stadium, chasing rival fans and players.
Some were cornered in the stadium, parts of which were set on fire.
Egyptian fans are notoriously violent, says our correspondent, particularly supporters of al-Ahly known as the Ultras.
They have been heavily implicated in the political confrontations recently, our correspondent adds.
Wednesday's violence broke out at the end of the match, which, unusually, the Port Said side Masry won 3-1.
As match ended, their fans flooded onto the pitch attacking Ahly players and fans.
It is one of the worst football-related incidents in Egypt.
All premier league matches have been cancelled and the newly-elected Egyptian parliament is to hold an emergency session on Thursday, state TV has announced.

Yeah we won! Oh shit we are going to die.
73 unnecessary deaths.
Pfff and they keep telling me sports are healthy.
Are you serious? All those lives ended because of football? It's pathetic.

Football's a passion, and it just happens that crime is more often than not the same.
And we all rag on at Canada for a hockey game riot?
Sports are one of the most moronic things to riot over.
And we all rag on at Canada for a hockey game riot?
Blood thirsty Canadians, murderous psychopaths all of them.
Video games and a million other things are a passion too and they don't cause massive riots that get 70+ people killed.
Well yes, but the only people who get half as angry at games are twelve year-olds with tiny arms. If they were played outdoors by hundreds of burly, easily-angered men all stuffed into a crowded stadium, I'd imagine it'd be quite a different story.
I love how people think this has anything to do with football. Like gathering thousands of people in a politically unstable country is going to end well. I'm pretty sure it started out as a fight about football that grew into a brawl, and then into a political riot.
What's really fucked up, though; is that I have a friend down there who's telling me that the military are not doing anything. The one time you need them there, huh?
This is one of the reasons why patriotism in football sucks.
Holy shit and I thought the fights in Europe were brutal
Are you fucking kidding me? :downs:
And I thought the Old Firm was bad
Bunch of idiots.
Not a lot of security for a match between known bitter rivals. A conspiracy theorist might be suspicious. Of course, lots of people will be in denial.
They should just put large electrified fences around the bleachers.
This is one of the reasons why patriotism in football sucks.
I couldn't agree more.
This is what I don't like about international soccer/football. Not only do I find it boring to watch it seems to cause a lot of fights/riots.
And didn't real madrid and Barcelona have rivalries to the extend that it goes political?
to sum it all up:
lol

No where is mature enough for sports games, sports riots happen every year in multiple countries.
You don't understand. Football is the highlight of many people's lives, cheering their team on at the weekends or on television is what they live for.
There are some places in the world that are just not mature enough to host sports games. Obviously Egypt takes the cake as being one of the worst.
And Canada.
And Canada.
Because that one riot that had more to do with people just wanting to mess shit up then the game itself is totally a good representation.
Anybody else ready to move to another planet? This is sickening that this happened over a fucking GAME.
And didn't real madrid and Barcelona have rivalries to the extend that it goes political?
El Clasico, to an extent, is still political.
I never understand sports fans that behave this way.
Are you serious? All those lives ended because of football? It's pathetic.
Football is just the trigger, not the reason.
Actually word is, it was staged to create unrest.
this is why egypt is fucking bullshit
All over a football game...
Man that sucks.
Gee, sure is a lot of people in here complaining about sports.
On the topic: I keep hearing reports it was staged? Its probably wrong reporting but interesting.

Yeah because their military didn't help the country get rid of the regime or anything like that just last year right?
