It's an imageboard. A section called /b/ is filled with fucked up and random things. Nothing scary though. The other sections except 1 or 2 are fine.

4chan is fine, it's the NSFW boards you wanna watch out for (/b/, /r9k/, etc.) Their /vg/ and /g/ forums are very knowledgeable and fun.

4chan gets a bad name because of one board, that is /b/, or the random board, which is the largest and most popular board. While /b/ does the most in contribution to real life and internet culture alike, it is generally bad. The lack of rules on /b/ allows many to post gore, porn of varying types and legalities, racism, hate, drug-related material, and show off or gloat about illegal or immoral accomplishments. /b/ often raids other boards, which means they go and post their bad stuff on the other boards. Most of the boards are safe, you may get one or two small things, but be aware that you likely will come across something bad.
4han can be an interesting and immersive community, if you know how to use it and what to expect. Reading the rules and FAQ on the site will provide you with most of the information you need to know about the site in terms of content and rules.
All of 4chan gets a bad rap, when most of it is not deserved. /b/ is probably one of the only ones that is terrible, along with /a/ :smug:
