My mom's vietnamese so white rice is pretty much my whole families staple food. Is there something I can substitute for the rice? Does bread have carbs? What can I eat? How many carbs a day is considered low carb?
Don't.
but im trying to lose weight :(
Lower your calories. Keep your protein high. [editline]19th December 2011[/editline] Lift weights.
kellogs is dumb
I've been doing a bit of research and i heard that too much protein will cause you to burn protein for energy, causing your consumed carbohydrates to go to waste or converted to fat true?
kellogs is dumb
NO!!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!
Lower your calories. Keep your protein high. [editline]19th December 2011[/editline] Lift weights.
And lower your carbs. Carbs cause your blood sugar to go up which causes your body to have an insulin reaction, which in turn causes your body to store all the sugar as fat. A low carb diet will let you lose fat and maintain muscle. Also, low carb diets have been proven by science to be the most effective diet for weight loss in men. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/01/080111210350.htm (BOOM! Just science'd your ass!) If you go low carb, then you want to eat high protein, high fat foods, and no starches (bread, rice, potatoes), most fruits (certain berries are fine in moderation, like blackberries), certain dairy (ice cream and milk). Good foods would be meats, bacon, eggs, cheese, etc. You want to be getting your vegetables for the vitamins and minerals in them, plus the fiber is important when you're not getting any from fruits and grains. Check the nutrition labels on your foods for the carb counts. You only need to count carbs that you can actually digest, so what you do is take the total carb count and subtract the number of fiber grams from that to get the net carbs. (So something with 20 grams total carbs, but 9 grams fiber would only have 11 grams net carbs) If the food you want to eat has no nutrition label (like produce) then just search for it on one of these two sites: http://nutritiondata.self.com/ http://caloriecount.about.com/ http://www.reddit.com/r/keto/ This site is about ketogenic diets, which I am doing, has a nice little FAQ that has more information, and anything not covered by the FAQ can be answered by some of the folks there. But keto is pretty extreme, there are a lot of other low carb diets that are good. Use the googles and do some research yourself. If keto seems too extreme for you (25 carbs a day can be tricky if you're used to a high carb diet), try something like paleo, which is where you cut out grains, beans, starches and dairy, but you can eat meats, eggs, nuts, fruits, and non-starchy vegetables. Or just plain eat low glycemic index carbs like beans, whole grains, fruits, non-starchy vegetables, etc. I myself am on a low carb diet and have lost 20 pounds in a month (although 10 of those pounds were mostly water weight from starting that diet, but 2.5 pounds a week isn't bad), and honestly, calorie deficit and exercise alone hardly worked for me. I lost half a pound a week, felt hungry all the time and wasn't noticing any visible weight loss either, even though I was eating 1500 calories a day, lifting weights 5 times a week alongside cardio, and was eating a "balanced" diet. I now lift weights 3 times a week, eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm not instead of following a strict food schedule, and have nearly gone down a shirt size and have been losing weight pretty quickly while still feeling great.
Actually gamerwiki is smart. [editline]19th December 2011[/editline] Sorry for the box :/
alright so I guess i'll completely cut out rice and eat meat instead? can i substitute a protein shake and some bananas for lunch?
lol
alright so I guess i'll completely cut out rice and eat meat instead? can i substitute a protein shake and some bananas for lunch?
YOU"RE NOW REVOKED OUT OF ANY FURTHER ABILITY TO ASK QUESTIONS! PISS OFF NOW OR I KILL YOU SRSLY
alright so I guess i'll completely cut out rice and eat meat instead? can i substitute a protein shake and some bananas for lunch?
Bananas are high in carbs, all fruit is. Depending on what you make the protein shake out of, that could be fine. A scoop of protein powder in a cup of Calorie Countdown milk or just plain water is okay, depending on your choice in protein. I use the protein at my Wal Mart which has 4 carbs in a scoop, how much your would have might differ by brand. Before eating anything, try to figure out the nutrition facts of it. I've seen things that just shocked me on how many carbs there are, some hot dogs have them, lunch meat has them, milk is just full of sugar, certain seafoods have them, so you really gotta watch out. Packaged food always has nutrition facts on the back, but produce, you'll have to go to one of the sites I linked and figure it out yourself. And back to the subject of protein shakes, it's best to have real food. If you have to go to school, then just pack a lunch. What I do is just make up some chicken thighs or leg quarters for the week, put them in tupperware containers alongside some veggies, and the keep them in the fridge until the day I need them.
Holy fuck you guys are retarded and need to stop spending time on low-carb fanatic websites. If you think insulin spikes are the reason you are fat, then you may as well stop eating protein, because most sources of protein are just as insulin spiking (if not more so) as most sources of carbohydrate. Seriously the shit you are spouting gamerkiwi is based off research that is old as fuck and was poorly conducted in the first place. People that are scared of carbs are retarded, and low-carb diets are infinitely stupid. Carbohydrates contribute to lipolysis on a small level. Not to mention keep muscle glycogen in a positive state, are an ergogenic aid to anaerobic activity (performance enhancing) etc... If you are in a caloric deficit, IT DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER. There is a video log on youtube of a guy who has just done his cut from 12% to 8% bodyfat, EATING ICECREAM <--- that's milk protein and lactose sugars, all HIGHLY insulinogenic. By retarded low-carb fanatic logic, he should've been piling on fat. Instead, he got lean. Very lean. You know why? He was in a caloric deficit, his body is going to catabolize tissue regardless of what you eat. Goddamn, I hate all of you fruity breath, bad B.O, ketosis obsessed motherfuckers. Ketogenic diets can suck my dick, if i wasn't so deathly afraid of getting ketone filled saliva all over my pretty dick. [editline]21st December 2011[/editline] oh holy fuck I just saw you mentioned glycemic index. I want to ram a spoon into your eye socket.
but the book " why we get fat" reccomends low carb diets and gives examples of them . insulin is evilllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
eat nothing but bacon
jaeger saves the day
Jaeger is fukin smart.
i am enlightened
this nerd jaeger thinks keto diets are bad

I've found myself easily making 1500 calories without feeling hungry in the slightest between meals, when I used to do 2000 calories on a higher carb diet and felt hungry constantly. Shit, I'm not hungry in the mornings anymore. I don't eat much until lunch. In fact, the only diet I've ever been on that works is keto, I've been losing 2.5 pounds a week, while on a moderate carb diet, I lost .5 pounds a week while exercising a ton. Also, you get to eat bacon. How awesome is that for a diet?
I've done a Keto diet for about 5 days, consuming no more than 12g carbs per day. I Couldn't lift anything, all you think about is food, your breath smells VERY BAD. In some cases your reaction time will be lowered, no carbs = not as much energy to your brain.

Plz help my mussles don 't have any glycogen stores! But it's okay, after all Im just going to sit on the couch all day with my funky ketone B.O and eat my special low carb foods i anally scoured the nutritional info for. Omg omg omg i accidentally ate 30g of carbs im going 2 be fat!!!! slashwristslashslash Also the lower appetite is a load of shit (read: placebo, read: your body adapting to a lower caloric intake because you're no longer stuffing your face) and is not proven in any literature. I'm rarely hungry upon waking, and I don't really get hungry between meals while cutting, what the fuck is your point? You can provide satiety while on a normal diet too, it's called having a bit of fat in your meal like any normal meal does. omg! amazing! I get to and do, eat bacon as well. What's your point? It also occurs to me that 99% of people on ketogenic diet forums still look like shit even when some of them have been "keto dieting" for up to 3+ years. But it has no carbs, so i can't gain fat!!! :downs:

You can lessen some of the effects by drinking extra water and getting extra electrolytes. I felt like shit for the first 2 days, and could hardly lift as well, but now I'm lifting heavy again (Granted, I can't keep up the same intensity I used to, though) The breath I can vouch for, it made my breath smell funny, too. But I don't have any cravings, so I don't know what you're talking about when you say that food was all you thought about. But it has no carbs, so i can't gain fat!!! :downs:
"Ketogenic diets offer barely any benefit in terms of fat loss"-my ass. Low carb is proven to be more effective than plain old low calorie alone. Anyone with any sense, regardless of diet will realize that a caloric deficit and exercise in general are essential to weight loss. I still exercise frequently, doing heavy weight lifting 3x a week, and doing 40 minutes on an elliptical machine every day between my lifting sessions. Yes, less glycogen in my muscles has effected my strength. If I ate carbs, I would lift more, and I could keep up a higher intensity. But my cardio, which is all endurance, was unaffected after adapting. Just because you do low carb, doesn't mean that all of a sudden you're sitting on the couch eating bacon all day, most ketoers I know start doing exercise when they start their diets.
However, studies also indicate that while a low carbohydrate diet will not reduce endurance performance after adapting, they will probably deteriorate anaerobic performance such as strength training or sprint running because these processes rely on glycogen for fuel.[118] A living example that a ketogenic diet can indeed be combined with outstanding achievements in physical exercise is the Olympic biathlon gold medalist Björn Ferry, who won his gold medal after about 6 months on a low-carbohydrate high-fat diet.

low-carbohydrate, non-energy-restricted diets appear to be at least as effective as low-fat, energy-restricted diets in inducing weight loss for up to 1 year

Also the lower appetite is a load of shit (read: placebo, read: your body adapting to a lower caloric intake because you're no longer stuffing your face) and is not proven in any literature. I'm rarely hungry upon waking, and I don't really get hungry between meals while cutting, what the fuck is your point?
(It may be a load of shit, but it's a load of shit backed up by science WHICH IS NOT VERY LOAD OF SHITTY AT ALL) Lots of studies have proven that protein and fats both cause reduced appetites, and that it's a scientifically observed fact that people on low carb diets see lowered appetites. This is caused by the increased protein intake that people get on low carb diets. Also, the point I was making was the fact that I never felt satisfied on a normal diet, and would be fucking hungry in the morning, but while on a low carb diet, I'll find myself completely skipping breakfast because I didn't feel like eating then, and I rarely have any snacks bigger than a tablespoon of peanut butter or an ounce of cheese.
Those are terrible studies, even worse that you are trying to use them to support your opinion. Yes, lots of studies prove protein and fat provide higher satiety than carbohydrates do, NO SHIT SHERLOCK, we've only known this for 50+ years. So of course, when people who don't eat a high protein diet in the first place suddenly increase their protein and fat content, they aren't going to be as hungry between meals. The control in these studies is poorly conducted and irrelevant, because without a direct comparison to a high protein, moderate carb, low to moderate fat diet, it doesn't mean a thing. Oh let's just ignore that part about the people used in those weight loss studies having diabetes, because that's not relevant at all - oh wait, IT IS. But please, keep grabbing at anything with the words "study" in it that may remotely support your opinions. Again, ketosis offers zero lipolysis benefit over calorie restricted diets that include carbs. You are basically affecting your anaerobic and mental performance (and making you smell fruity) for some extra water loss.
What studies do you have to support your claims? The extra water weight loss on a low carb diet is only temporary, after the first week or so, the weight loss is mostly fat, and it's been proven scientifically to be more effective for fat kiss than a low-calorie diet, which is what you're advocating.
unf my laptop crashed this as I was clicking reply, so now I am on my desktop. I've already had this exact same argument, multiple times on this forum. So my patience for you is nil, nilch, zero, non existing. Use the search function, and/or go to pages 2,3 and 4 of the sticky to see this exact same argument played out.
