JK Shin, head of Samsung Mobile Communications, confirmed today that his company will be releasing a four-inch version of the Galaxy S III on October 11th in Germany. Shin announced the news during a meeting with Korean press on Wednesday.
Shin didn't reveal many details about the device, though he said it was spurred by increasing demand for 4-inch devices in Europe. He also noted that it won't be an entry-level handset, telling reporters it will have "full form factor." This would make it an unusual addition to the Android landscape, where high-end devices tend to be 4.5 inches or larger.
"We'll be launching a 4-inch Galaxy S III on the 11th in Germany," Shin said. "There's a lot of demand for a 4-inch screen device in Europe. Some call it an entry-level device, but we call it 'mini.'"
Shin's confirmation comes just ahead of Apple's rumored iPad mini announcement.
Update: Samsung has confirmed to The Verge that it will hold an event on October 11th. "Galaxy S III mini will come with 4-inch display and we are going to unveil the product tomorrow (Oct 11th)."
Ha.
I'm quite happy with my Galaxy S3. I love the big screen. Then again, I have fairly large hands, so it's easy for me to reach my thumb everywhere on it.
Hey look it's the same phone we've seen one bajillion times in a new format

Such are smartphones.
Sorry they don't sell a pentagram one to suit your freaky needs.
The specs are worse than the S2 though

Yeah man how dare I ask for some innovation
The big screen was used as a feature in an iPhone ad.
The size of the screen is a pain for me; I can't reach the top corner if I'm holding it from the bottom. I have to use 2 hands :P

This is my big problem with all the huge phones that seem to be this weird craze lately. I simply cannot operate them as easily as a smaller phone. The ideal size to me would be something like the Lumia 800 or the iPhone 4S but nobody makes flagships like that anymore.
I remember when the craze was making phones as ridiculously small as possible.
If you can't fit it in your pocket, it's not a phone.

That's why you hold it in the middle.

maybe samsung are working from the wrong end
instead of a smaller phone they should release a line of clothes with enlarged pockets specifically to fit the S3 as it is

Doesn't make it any less of a phone...
Did they really cut the specs of the phone? The Galaxy SII was a good size for me and its what I currently use. I was kind of disappointed that the SIII was slightly larger.
Hey, it's the size of the iPhone 5 now.

800 x 480 pentile display

I thought that they would at least keep the resolution.
So it keeps the same form factor but smaller screen and worse resolution?
Man people have been dying for this
Hey, it's the size of the iPhone 5 now.
Hey, it's the size of a lot of different phones.
But really, this seems like it's gonna suck a bit. I don't know why they're calling it the Galaxy SIII mini, should just be a phone on its own, unless they stepped the game up.
Any smartphone with a screen over 4 inches are uncomfortable for me to hold as a phone.
Yeah man how dare I ask for some innovation
Blame patent trolling on that.
And the information from most news sources points to Apple starting it on the smartphone market.
So yeah, that's how shit is today.
I'm fine with my S3, use it more than my tablet cause the screen is perfect for me. Why make it smaller?

For people who want it to be smaller.

Big things come in small packages, my friend.
:brohug:
Only available in white. If you want the large screen, then you'll have to settle with the black color.
I have the Galaxy Note and my pants are tight as fuck.

Thing is, the Galaxy S III is only a tiny bit bigger than the iPhone 5 because of the obscene amounts of black bezel around the screen.
Also I have my Galaxy Nexus placed next to a iPhone 4S right now and it's barely any bigger horizontally, the width is just a bit bigger.
The specs are worse than the S2 though
That's because this phone is targeted as a low end phone.
I have the Galaxy S3 in white and I love it, it's not to big at all for me, and fits in my pocket perfectly - and at a comment earlier, I think it looks pretty good too.
If they go back to the resolution of the S2, I don't really see why you just wouldn't buy a S2 instead
