In the short-term, the study found, the law will cost publishers €10 million, or about $10.9 million, which would fall disproportionately on smaller publishers. Consumers would experience a smaller variety of content, and the law "impedes the ability of innovation to enter the market." The study concludes that there's no "theoretical or empirical justification" for the fee. The full study (PDF) is available for download; it's in Spanish with an English-language executive summary. The law, which provides for fines of up to €700,000 for violators, was passed in October. Unlike previous attempts to impose a "Google News tax" in Germany and Belgium, the Spanish law doesn't allow publishers to opt out. In response, Google simply closed down Google News in Spain.
Another clear example of how the "baby boomers" just don't understand how the Internet works...
List of people, excluding Spanish regulators who didn't pay attention to what happened in Germany, who are surprised:
Slightly offtopic I can never fucking ever find whatever I am looking for on Google News.
It makes me think sometimes that old people shouldn't be allowed to vote.
I wonder what would happen if voting was limited from both ends 18-45?
I wonder what would happen if voting was limited from both ends 18-45?
45's a bit low, we'd instantly kill off elderly care with that range. Finnish overall life expectancy is 81, I'd say 60-65 maybe. I'd want a study into what causes people to become stupid when they grow too old, for a more accurate number.

They knew pretty much the consequences, this was only to take out any news aggregator that doesn't want to display their "certified" news. In the end, all the mainstream newspapers are controlled by the government, either directly or through their business. They lost readers? Sure, but they don't care as they are recieving public funds as long as they write whatever wants the government. This is only another nonsensical action on the large list they have done. Everything is corrupt here, and they want to keep the status-quo.
I wonder what would happen if voting was limited from both ends 18-45?
I think thats a steap cutoff from both ends, I for one didnt really understand or care about politics at 18. I would say 25 - 55 would be a better range
It makes me think sometimes that old people shouldn't be allowed to vote.
Well it makes me think sometimes that our tech legislation which like the dmca or the computer fraud act, might actually be written by people with no understanding of how computers work and maybe matters of purely technical law or scientific consensus should be left to individual agencies. Like why does congress even have a say on what NASA deems scientifically relevant, the Pluto mission almost didn't happen 4 times and nobody today would agree with th e sentiment back then that that rock wasn't worth it
It's not people becoming stupid when they get older, it's people being born in a completely different time and being unable to adapt to new technologies and new social standards and societal progressions.
I'm pretty confident that this will actually die out with the baby boomers. In the future the generation (us) who grew up with the internet will carry the knowledge of the internet well into our old age, and ridiculous technological ignorance will be a thing of the past. That or there will be something completely new by the time we are old that we both fear and misunderstand which causes us to whither and curl into the figurative foetal position just like our generation before us. Ehh.. you choose which one you like better.
I wonder what would happen if voting was limited from both ends 18-45?
I don't think there should be an age limit. For a body of people who've paid taxes their whole life, and some who are now dependent on government services, they should have a vote. There should be a different fix, for instance, having government members who actually understand even the most basic concepts of technology and the economy. The government should have expert advisers reviewing proposals to change. Not just passing legislation on a whim.
I find it absolutely HILARIOUS how the "progressive, left-leaning, freedom and equality for all" Facepunch is protesting a poorly thought out and backwards law by sitting there and seriously considering having age cut offs for voting, which is not only the antithesis of "freedom and equality for all" but is also itself a poorly thought out and backwards idea. The irony in this thread is delicious, please keep it coming. The You're-a-Retard Gods are feasting tonight. (User was banned for this post ("Why reply" - Orkel))

When they just stop the local Google website from serving the news, not letting the traffic through and the tax hurting local news, politicians either realize their mistakes and fruitlessness tax and correct it or continue hurting all, including themselves.

Or that the first solution to every legal problem is to kill someone or throw them in jail for the rest of their life? Nah that ain't Facepunch at all.
It makes me think sometimes that old people shouldn't be allowed to vote.
The problem isn't that older voters well vote. But the legislative is generally filled with nonexperts. Hell take facepunch for instance - we're generally fairly versed in tech, but compare us to the general population.
