All I have are a bunch of $3 carpenders knives from the local hardware store (I basically get a new one when the old one gets dull) but I've been meaning to get into blacksmithing for quite some time and thought I'd start out by making myself a knife. Semi-related, what's the general consensus on which steels are good and which are bad? It's an absolute mess trying to decipher the mass of different names and classifications for different alloys and types and whatnot. Also semi-semi related but on thread topic, stainless vs carbon steel?

So for me, I need a steel that can get a good edge and hold it for awhile before I have to sharp it. Also heat treating is a MAJOR thing, you can take 2 of the exact same types of steel but if they are heat treated wrong they will be bad knives. Both of my knives are AUS8 steel which is fairly nice for holding a sharper edge for awhile but loses its edge a bit faster than other steels. As far as the carbon vs stainless, again it depends on what you need your knife for.

At work i have a favourite knife which i use quite a lot of stuff. It's a smaller version of this the edge get dull pretty quickly though so i have to sharpen it quite a lot but it doesn't take many strokes before it's sharp and dandy once more. you'd think that with a metal handle like that it gets slippery sooner or later but i haven't actually had that problem before. a workmate complained that the knife gives him blisters but that too is a problem i've never had. It is an inside joke at work that whenever i pick the knife up i will loudly proclaim this knife to be the best knife in the kitchen.
mainly use it for buttering toast in the mornings, it's never let me down. i've considered getting a custom sheathe for it, but i don't know if it's worth the money. opinions?

If so, do they pay for your knives or do you buy your own?

I have one of these but a black one that's Winchester. How the fuck do you close it? :v:

I also have this rusty-ass Kukri my dad got for free when he bought a gun. Will post pics.
I have one of these but a black one that's Winchester. How the fuck do you close it? :v:
There's a safety latch near your thumb when you're holding it. Slide that to the right (or left, sometimes), and pull the blade down
I have a Kabar, and I ordered a Kershaw Cryo the other day. No idea if I'll get it or not soon. Amazon said the external company had some in stock, yet I checked their website and it said they were out of stock.
I'm assuming you work at a restaurant? If so, do they pay for your knives or do you buy your own?
they are all the restaurants knives. i probably could bring my own but nah, there's enough knives for all of us.
I just want to know if I'll get it, considering that it said it should be shipping by today. If it's out of stock, i'd like to just order it from somewhere else.

I bought an Carbon SRK for a really good price just to hold me off until I can get one. [editline]6th March 2013[/editline]
Nearby I have my Busse Street Boss:
Damn sexy Busse.
My cousin and my Kershaw RAMs. Mine has the DLC coated blade. Really solid knife with a great design. It's a shame they're discontinued.
Here is a survival knife I know nothing about that I got from my uncle. I've been slowly nursing back to health as it was kept in horrible condition. The bottom cap unscrews and when I first got it there was matches, fishing hooks, weights and line, something that probably used to be a flint and striking pad for the matches. I had a picture of all of it but its no longer on my computer and I can't find the post I made a while ago that had it.
Not really a knife, but I got Gränsfors Bruks Small Forest Axe this week.
Gränsfors do make the best axes, perfectly balanced and handmade from good quality steel, what more can one ask for... *drifts away into the abyss at the back of my mind never to be heard from again*

Leathermans are for pussies
A multitool will never replace my dedicated knife. I'm all for them, but it's not a substitute.
I've got this bad boy I love it, but it's kind of dull now. What would be the best way to resharpen it effectively?
