Congress wants Trump to stop deleting his tweets

One example the lawmakers cited is Trump’s [URL="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/donald-trump-misspelling-twitter-hereby_us_58ba2f0fe4b0d2821b4e64f7"]habit of misspelling and then deleting tweets[/URL], which they warned “could pose a violation to the [URL="https://www.archives.gov/presidential-libraries/laws/1978-act.html"]Presidential Records Act[/URL]” if the deleted tweets are not archived.

“Many of the messages sent from these accounts are likely to be presidential records and therefore must be preserved,” they wrote, referring to both Trump’s personal [URL="https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump?lang=en"]@realDonaldTrump[/URL] account and his official [URL="https://twitter.com/potus"]@POTUS[/URL] account. “It has been reported, however, that President Trump has deleted tweets, and if those tweets were not archived, it could pose a violation of the Presidential Records Act,” Chaffetz and Cummings wrote in the letter.

Trump sometimes [URL="http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2017/01/21/trump_deletes_tweet_after_writing_he_is_honered_to_serve.html"]deletes tweets due to spelling errors[/URL]. Over the weekend, he [URL="http://nymag.com/selectall/2017/03/president-trump-its-spelled-h-e-r-e-b-y.html"]deleted two tweets[/URL] that misspelled the word “hereby.”

Under former President Barack Obama, White House digital staffers instituted a system of [URL="https://twitter.com/ezramechaber/status/822855444737785856"]auto-archiving tweets[/URL] from the president and other top officials.

“We eventually set up auto-archiving for official platforms, so errors could be corrected while preserving the original,” Ezra Mechaber, a former deputy director in the White House’s office of digital strategy, tweeted in January.

Those tweets are [URL="http://www.politico.com/story/2017/01/obama-tweets-social-media-archive-233245"]now the property of the National Archives and Records Administration[/URL].

In their letter, Chaffetz and Cummings also asked the White House to investigate whether federal officials are using personal email accounts for government business. Under the Presidential Records Act, White House officials must forward emails sent from those accounts to their government account within 20 days. The same is true of employees at federal agencies, under the Federal Records Act.
