An Australian big wave surfer has pushed the limits of the sport by taking on monster Hawaiian waves in the dark. Mark Visser, from Queensland's Sunshine Coast, surfed 10m-high waves at the ferocious island break Jaws, armed with only a headlamp to illuminate his heart-stopping ride. "I hit a few chops ... It freaks you out, you get air and you're going ridiculously fast," Visser told ninemsn. The 28-year-old professional surfer had been training for the stunt for about three years, and was wracked with anxiety over his potentially deadly task. "The scariest part was actually the build up," he said. "Before I even got in the water." "It was a real unknown, we didn't know what to expect." Visser faced the threat of sharks, which are more active at night, as well as the danger that he might wipe-out. In waves the size of those at Jaws, surfers can be pushed almost 20m below the surface if they are thrown off their board. He used state-of-the art LED lights and a modified surfboard to assist him in the quest, which was filmed for an upcoming documentary Nine Lives. The result is a scene as terrifying as it is beautiful — thanks to the neon hues of the light reflecting off the peaks in the water. But Visser said he hardly had time to absorb his surroundings. "It was just so overwhelming you didn't even have time to think," he said. "Your survival instincts just kick in. It was the scariest and the most exciting thing I've ever done." He said the footage released so far does not show his biggest wave, which will be featured in the documentary.
Source: http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/8201488/aussie-surfer-rides-giant-waves-in-darkness
So badass.
I can't even imagine doing that. I get about 10 out metres into the ocean and then pussy out, even when there AREN'T waves - IN DAYLIGHT.
Here in Norway we surf on 50 cm tall waves :smith:
Here in Norway we surf on 50 cm tall waves :smith:
You should surf Fjords.
That's crazy and badass at the same time!
Sinister, Brah.
