It would be worse if they were a police state who killed citizens indiscriminately to protect the government's comfortable position (like Egypt) Saudi was a tribal country only up until recently, it pretty much still is because of such heavy tradition and strict practices. You can't expect anybody to just walk up, tell them they're wrong, and they flip a lightswitch and tell everybody the party's over, giving out handbooks on being 'civilized' as they quietly form a single file line. humans are human, it sucks. I'm hoping oil companies run dry on profits so they can stop pushing against alternative energy already. Seriously, I don't think we can truly fathom how different things would be if we didn't rely on a resource that we didn't have to extract out of other peoples' cold dead hands
