Stagecoach has sent letters to staff informing them that drivers who weigh over 20 stone will either be offered weight loss advice or a different job. The firm said the health and safety limit was not set by Stagecoach but by vehicle manufacturers and applied to all transport companies. A spokeswoman said the company had taken steps to remind drivers across the UK about the policy, which had always been in place. "We take the health and safety of our people and our passengers very seriously," she said. "All bus operators have a duty of care to make sure these weight limits are adhered to and we have taken steps to remind all of our bus companies of the safe working load limits for the specific vehicles in our fleet." But transport manager for London bus company Beeline, Stewart Field, branded the policy discriminatory. "I wouldn't put that on anyone. Sometimes it's not down to lack of exercise. It could be a medical condition, like a thyroid problem," he said. "We put our drivers through rigorous and regular medical checks - this is enough." Mr Field added he did not believe weighing 20 stone would hinder the ability to drive. It is not the first time drivers and bus companies have clashed over the weighty issue. In 2005, 17 Australian bus drivers appealed to a tribunal after reportedly being sacked for being too fat. And last year 53-year-old Marie Parker, who weighed 12 stone, was allegedly told to lose weight if she wanted a job as a bus driver.
What does the bus company expect, fit drivers? They're driving buses for a living, I'm pretty sure they're going to gain weight.
What does the bus company expect, fit drivers? They're driving buses for a living, I'm pretty sure they're going to gain weight.
My stepdad drives buses for a living and he isn't fat. xD
"I wouldn't put that on anyone. Sometimes it's not down to lack of exercise. It could be a medical condition, like a thyroid problem," he said.
It doesn't matter. There's weight limits for a reason. I can't stand it when fat people yell discrimination because they're too fat and might break something.
My stepdad drives buses for a living and he isn't fat. xD
lol xd nice story :D

Good motivation for losing weight.
Wtf is up with all the xD's Also, This is a good idea.
Oh my god I might have to lose weight? DISCRIMINATION I SAY!
YOU ARE DISCRIMINATING US, FATS! /thread
They should charge double price for someone over a certain weight as they do with Airplanes
If the manufacturer has put a warning in there, it's there for a reason. I hate to say it, but if that's what they're driving, then they should be heeding those safety warnings. Would you want to be on the bus that careens off the street and into the nearest building because the overweight driver has fallen through his seat? You could quite probably be killed - it's a serious concern.
How the fuck are they going to break the seat, god damn it. If they can't fit through the door or if their rolls keep getting caught under the brake pedal, THEN we have a real issue.
This prove my point. Fat people is worth less.
Apparently this man is so skinny he is unable to use grammar properly.
What does the bus company expect, fit drivers? They're driving buses for a living, I'm pretty sure they're going to gain weight.
tell them to get outside and push
Well maybe the fatties SHOULD lose weight.
So nice to know society has found something convenient to replace racial discrimination.
everyone in britain is fat waey to discriminate a whole nation
what the fuck
Racial discrimination was completely illogical. Weight discrimination is not. People who are obese cost British tax payers a lot of money as they get ill constantly and require medication. People who are a different race do not cause us any problems, and it is an irreversable aspect of the human anatomy. You are not born fat, you get fat because you eat too much.
How much weight is 20 stone?
How much weight is 20 stone?
280 pounds I think.
Tyres?
I read that as "Fat Bus Drivers Warned Over Square Tyres"
had no idea driving all the time made you eat unhealthily [editline]04:54PM[/editline] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_English
It doesn't matter when the most exercise you get in a day is climbing 2 steps to get on the bus.
I've never seen that word used in British/UK English ever.
I've never seen that word used in British/UK English ever.
Have you never driven past a petrol station that sold tyres?
