The AA said it believed the new system could cover a network of streets as opposed to a straight line, and was “probably geared up to zones in residential areas.” The Home Office is testing the cameras at two sites, one in Southwark, London, and the other A374 between Antony and Torpoint in Cornwall. The `SpeedSpike’ system, which calculates average speed between any two points in the network, has been developed by PIPS Technology Ltd, an American-owned company with a base in Hampshire. Details of the trials are contained in a House of Commons report. The company said in its evidence that the cameras enabled "number plate capture in all weather conditions, 24 hours a day". It also referred to the system's "low cost" and ease of installation. The system could be used for "main road enforcement for congestion reduction and speed enforcement", and could help to "eliminate rat-runs" and cut speeds outside schools, it added. It could also reduce the need for speed humps. The development of speed cameras has raised concerns about expanding state surveillance. The Home Office said it was unable to comment on the trials because of "commercial confidentiality". The AA said it would watch the system “carefully” but it did not believe there was anything sinister. “It is a natural evolution of the technology that is out there,” a spokesman said.[/release] That's a new way to get them. I'm not a fan of camera-based speeding tickets - with a cop, you can convince them that 80 in a 65 is reasonable, while a satellite would just fine your ass.
Oh Airstrip One, you crazy.
Oh Airstrip One, you crazy.
Right, because speeding tickets = 1984.
Right, because speeding tickets = 1984.
Right, because satellite spying of citizen = 1984
So now, where ever you go, if you go slightly over the speed limit, you're boned? yey....
I'm pretty sure this would have the potential to do A LOT more than just give speeding tickets.

"But satellite, you were doing 1000 to catch me!"
There is a reason speed limits exist so I can't argue with this.
"But officer, you were doing 80 to catch me!" "But satellite, you were doing 1000 to catch me!"
Oh, god, that would be an epic excuse! Who went faster, the car with a top speed of 140mph at most, or the satellite going 1k to 2k mph to catch my license plate number? That's pathetic.
ITT coming up with a new way to stop something that is illegal is wrong.
ITT coming up with a new way to stop something that is illegal is wrong.
ITT: Englishmen don't trust their government with satellite cameras.
Big Brother much?
The whole point of speed cameras is that they're visible! People are always going to speed, but highly visible road markings with large brightly reflective CCTV cameras make people go "Oh shit, I'll slow down here to avoid getting fined!". That's why speed cameras are generally placed in areas where people endanger themselves and others by speeding (e.g. near a hidden junction) and generally not in places were it's actually a bit ok to speed (i.e. the middle of the M25). Satellite speed cameras will mean that people won't be as deterred in dangerous areas because they don't see the speed cameras. The Government might as well just say "Yeah, basically we don't care about road safety. This is primarily about making money." It seems unfair that speeding is penalised when many more flagrant and more dangerous acts of driving and parking so frequently go unpunished.
machines/technologies lack compassion and reasoning with human nature and reason. so your nation is boned as into reasoning for your ticket. Here in the USA, they'll have to bring the satellite back down, since we have the right to face our accuser.
This isn't to watch traffic, they will install secret xray cameras so they can see everyone. they want to watch everybody and everything, next thing you know they implant brain chips. They want to turn the UK to a Totalitarianism state :tinfoil: /conspiracy theorist

If it WAS a real time space camera I'll be asking which alien race they stole the technology from. Or put simply... "Officer, how do you know I was speeding? The sky is clearly overcast"
This just in: First satellite mounted camera defaced with its lens spray-painted over. Moon chavs to blame.
This just in: Massive numbers of tickets issued on highways
rage...
This is just in: Users here on FP think they are important enough for the government to spy on their personal lives with satellites. Unless you are a dangerous criminal/terrorist they won't dedicate a satellite to you, you aren't worth even a second of satellite surveillance ("you" meant as "us").
ITT coming up with a new way to stop something that is illegal is wrong.
What?
Things like this can not be properly automated, it takes a human's judgment to decide if someone deserves a ticket. I hope to fuck this doesn't spread.
