German court rules synagogue torching not anti-Semitism, but act to ‘criticize Israel’
A German regional court has ruled that three men who used Molotov cocktails in July 2014 to torch a synagogue were not influenced by anti-Semitism.
A Wuppertal judge last Friday upheld a lower court’s 2015 ruling that German-Palestinians convicted of arson against the city’s synagogue did so merely to “criticize Israel” and “bring attention to the Gaza conflict.” Fire damage caused by 31-year-old Mohamad E., 26-year-old Ismail A. and 20-year-old Mohammad A. (full names withheld by German authorities) totaled almost $850.
The court went on to cite Israel’s Operation Protective Edge against Hamas in the summer of 2014 — and the criminals’ consumption of alcohol — as the apparent impetus for the crime, the Jerusalem Post reported Friday.
“What do Jews in Germany have to do with the Middle East conflict? Every bit as much as Christians, non-religious people or Muslims in Germany, namely, absolutely nothing,” said Volker Beck, a leading Green Party MP, after the lower court’s initial ruling, JP reported. “The ignorance of the judiciary toward anti-Semitism is for many Jews in Germany especially alarming.”
The is not the first time Wuppertal’s court system has made national news in a story linked to Islam. Its district court judges ruled last November that gangs of men who harangued citizens in 2014 while wearing “shariah police” vests did not break any laws.
You probably should read the article.
“criticize Israel” and “bring attention to the Gaza conflict."
wonder how many mental backflips they had to do to get to this
You probably should read the article. Just saying.
I did, but there was another article about "underground nazis" or something like that а few days ago, and I'm pretty sure there was something else.

Well this has nothing to do really with Nazis.
Now if you want to get into a real fun talk about how figures like Amin Al Huessini has inspired modern anti-semitism in the radical Islam today through his connections with Nazi Germany in WW2....
Sounds like that particular German state's court system is a bit fucked because you must go to lengths to claim that it has to do with Israel and not anti-semitism.
If theyd attacked an embassy id understand, but come on. They targeted a Synagogue. They're targeting Jews indiscriminately, not Israelis. This is anti Semitism.

Would you really? Perhaps demonstrate is a better term, or did you actually mean attack?
Would you really? Perhaps demonstrate is a better term, or did you actually mean attack?
The point (I'm guessing) is that the court's argument really can only be seen as legitimate if the attack was against a state institution as opposed to a church, as the state of Israel =/= Jews
Not to validate violent protest
Nah. Thinking that all Jewish people = Israel is definitely anti-Semitism.
It's no different from burning down a mosque because you think all Muslims = ISIS.
German courts in general have really been on the shit end of news lately.
Itd make sense if it were an Embassy rather than a Synagogue.
Was the Synagogue operated by Israel? If no, nope, antisemitic, just like torching a Mosque because your mom died in Nice is islamophobic
No, it was lit up by people of Palestinian origin. They are Semites themselves, so it couldn't be anti-semitic.

Anti-Semitism doesn't actually mean anti-Semitism, it just means hatred towards Jews whether racial or cultural or religious. It's stupid that they use such an inaccurate term but that's life.

When "racial science" was accepted as factual, in order to make their hatred of Jews seem more legitimate, racist rhetoricians used the term "Semite" (to refer specifically to Jewish peoples) and other proper-sounding phrasings in their discourse. So we have the term antisemitism.
Would you really? Perhaps demonstrate is a better term, or did you actually mean attack?
I mean id understand it not being called anti-Semitism.
Maybe I should start torching government buildings, it is just a way to criticize.

It is also nice again not reading this on any german mainstream news site or channel
This is the kind of shit people should get riled up for, not Pewdiepie making a joke.

Yet, it has basically the attention drawn to it of a two year old.

You honestly couldn't make this shit up.

Does this keep happening?
He is gonna say yes.

I, too, think "It is also nice again not reading this on any german mainstream news site or channel" because it is stupid. Recycling the same news. Yeah, maybe event, ruling and first appeal, makes sense. But 2nd appeal onwards, enough, if its not overturned.
Well isn't this story worth reporting considering the ruling this time is far more interesting/controversial compared to the previous articles?
The same. Very same. Upheld for the third time
So a court with more authority makes a crazy ruling?
Sounds like a valid story to me.
Just sounds like this state's crazy judiciary rather than Germany though.

My German isn't the best, but this still seems different with the Israel motive being thrown in.
Just before it seems like they were keeping the Anti-Semitic charge off.
