Doctors have been granted permission to perform an urgent Caesarean section on a mentally-ill woman with diabetes. High Court judge Mr Justice Hayden gave specialists at the Royal Free London NHS Trust approval after a five-hour hearing at the Court of Protection. He said the decision was "draconian" but necessary because the mother's life may be in danger. The woman, 32, who is 32 weeks pregnant, was deemed unable to make the decision over how to give birth. The ruling, late on Friday, came after doctors applied for permission to carry out the delivery in order that the patient's "unstable mental state" could be treated. A specialist from the trust told the Court of Protection in London, which specialises in issues relating to the sick and vulnerable, that their priority was "keeping this woman alive". The judge heard how she was thought to have paranoid schizophrenia, had stopped eating and tried to kill herself. One doctor told the court that her mental and physical problems should improve and be easier to treat once the baby had been born.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-25996231
That's fucked
That's fucked

the mother's life may be in danger.
If her condition is threatening her own life as well as the child's, I don't really see anything wrong with this.
That's fucked
They're doing it because this situation could be even more fucked without it. They even mentioned that in the article:
High Court judge Mr Justice Hayden said the decision was "draconian" but necessary because the mother's life may be in danger.

One doctor told the court that her mental and physical problems should improve and be easier to treat once the baby had been born.
Childbirth is really tough on a mother, both physically and mentally.
I don't know, I feel like this is a really gray situation.
If her condition is threatening her own life as well as the child's, I don't really see anything wrong with this.
this. If a caesarean can save the life of the mother and child, and then permit later treatment for her mental illness, I see no reason why it shouldn't go ahead, the ethical standards are quite clear about it.
My girlfriend could in theory end up in this situation one day, since she's bipolar and she can really lose the plot if she doesn't take her meds, and if she doesn't take them she ends up not wanting to take them and she gets really unstable. It's unnerving is all, just knowing this could happen to my partner and affect a future child but it's nice to know judges will actually make a sensible decision in this case.
Ok.
Ok to you too.
I don't know, I feel like this is a really gray situation.
Nothing gray about it. Either you do this, and give mother+child a good chance at life, or you don't and risk letting the mother suffer immensely and put the fetus at harm.
I don't know, I feel like this is a really gray situation.
No it's not, it's almost as clear-cut as it gets (no pun intended)
I think I remember reading that her family wanted this outcome as well, for her and the child's sake.
i'm guessing the woman probably cannot take any anti-psychotic medicines while pregnant, so thats probably why she's this crazy

It just if you don't take it you basically end up refusing or forgetting to take it which basically turns you into an emotional trainwreck. I literally have a girlfriend who has a habit of forgetting and giving me outbursts frequently, which is stressful for both parties. Especially me because I have to try and calm her down and comfort her. Being bipolar is like a really slippery slope.
