[release]Man released from jail rearrested for stealing his inmate jumpsuit
Inexplicably, the Colton resident slipped into the jumpsuit before boarding a bus outside the jail in Rancho Cucamonga, prompting the driver to notify authorities.
A Colton man released from jail in San Bernardino County early Friday was rearrested for possession of stolen property — his bright orange inmate jumpsuit.
Jerry Valentino Aldama, 26, allegedly stole the jumpsuit when he was released from the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. Then, for reasons that mystify authorities, he slipped into the jail garb before boarding an eastbound bus outside the jail.
Thinking Aldama was on the lam, the Omnitrans bus driver alerted his dispatcher, who in turn called the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
"What really caused the driver to panic was when the gentlemen kept asking them how much it was to ride, and kept dropping his money,'' said Omnitrans spokeswoman Janice Kuhn. "The guy was acting really nervous.''
Once the call came in, the jail was put on lockdown and, thinking there was an escapee on the loose, a head count began, said Sgt. Frank Montanez.
Deputies immediately began tailing the bus, pulling it over in Fontana. Aldama, who was picked up the night before on a warrant for a shoplifting charge, was taken into custody without incident, Montanez said.[/release]

The irony
Sounds like something I'd do in Skyrim, wait until I'm released from jail and than steal whatever I want on the way out.

Yeah and get an EXTENDED prison sentence
It's not like you can be seen in public with them... perhaps his significant other has a jail rape fetish...?
Maybe that what's he feels comfortable wearing now. Jail does odd things to people.
Well, I worked in corrections and we used jumpsuits like this.
They're one piece and the person might have underwear on or something. They're not designed to embarrass inmates to dehumanize them. It's simply for identification reasons and also helps control contraband being passed around and weapon related assaults. These jumpsuits are designed without pockets or real good hiding spots. However that does not mean it can happen, it slows and limits all that contraband. Its also a bright color so if an inmate escapes they can be tracked. Not to many people wear jumpsuits that are orange with stripes with a logo of the county's sheriff's office stamped on the back of it. Easy tracking and identification. Why someone would want to steal one is beyond me. They're uncomfortable, itchy, not very functional at all.
However this guy has to be the stupidest criminal ever, he stole from the county and didn't even try to hide it. Reminds me of a guy I was releasing and he tried to steal our slippers. I could have easily recharged him and made an arrest of sorts. But i decided it was better to inform him of the crime he committed and give him the opportunity to surrender the items and go on his way. He agreed with me and left without incident.
Uh, what if he didn't know he wasn't supposed to wear it out? His actions make him seem very unaware of what he was trying to do.
Maybe he wanted it as a souvenir or something like that? I don't know. What a silly man.
Sucks to be that guy.

He was released, he went though the exit-procedure. They take all county owned items back, retrieve his property and allow him to change back in to this own clothing that he came in with. Any items he bought though commissary are given to him as well. All jumpsuits, slippers, or other issued items are returned back to the supply room.
He knew what he was doing, he was being released and everyone knows the procedure. It isn't something that is just random or weird. It is a very specific and guided process. Maybe he wanted to go back, a lot of people do shit like that to stay in because it is free food and bed.
