U.S. Visitors May Have to Hand Over Social Media Passwords: DHS

People who want to visit the United States could be asked to hand over their social-media passwords to officials as part of enhanced security checks, the country's top domestic security chief said.
Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly told Congress on Tuesday the measure was one of several being considered to vet refugees and visa applicants from seven Muslim-majority countries.
"We want to get on their social media, with passwords: What do you do, what do you say?" he told the House Homeland Security Committee. "If they don't want to cooperate then you don't come in."
uhhh what the fuck
i mean i can see doing a public social media background check, jobs do it all the time, but actually getting into someone's account? that's a pretty clear breach of standard privacy that i believe we've all come to agree is standard and ethical.
uhhhh
a lot of the stuff that's been happening the past few weeks just reeks of the alien and sedition acts 2.0 tbh
This is some dystopian tier bullshit, but I guess anything's alright as long as we get all those dirty terrorists right? When you have had almost no terror attacks from aliens or immigrants under the existing system and all of the ones that happened were done by radicalized citizens, I think you're looking in the wrong direction.

Companys in the US already do this.
This would get them banned from these services anyway, as most social media TOS forbid password sharing. Wrong, ineffectual, why do?

They look at your public profile. They don't demand your fucking passwords.
This was pushed through with Obama around 2010-11, which was leaked about a year ago. It's a dumb plan regardless of who comes up with it.

I expect some middle aged person who doesn't get the social media buzz coming up with this idea thinking people will just kindly hand over this information, then stacked on top of not understanding the point of the ToS or tech behind it.
Guess I won't go to the US in the near future then.
How exactly do they enforces this though? Social media profiles don't really have anything specific tying it down to that person, you could just say "oh yeah that profile that has my name and my photos isn't actually mine, someone else made it" and they can't really prove otherwise.

Some of them do actually. You'd be surprised what desperate people would do for a job.
I can hear every computer security professional screaming right now.

Some may request but it's absolutely bullshit. I've walked out on a job offer over it.
so that dystopian future is coming a lot faster than we all thought.
not long before we stop using the government controlled internet and create some sort of altnet

[sp]I wouldn't be surprised that visiting that page lands you on a NSA watchlist[/sp]
Can't I just say that I don't have one? I mean, considering the number of people who name themselves with fucked up names there on facebook and other social networks, that shouldn't be a problem(not to mention some other ones like lastfm or github).

Or just create an alternate Facebook profile exactly for these situations, tell them you don't really use Facebook so they aren't surprised when all they find is an empty page with your name on it and maybe a photo or two.
Yeah nah if I had to give my social media logins to the Russians when I visited in 2014 I wouldve cancelled my trip.

You probably did the right thing. You probably wouldn't want to work for a company so intrusive. If they can't even respect your privacy, how can you expect them to respect anything else?
Imagine blaming DHS when your GF finds you've texted your EX.
Now you can.
heck imagine Any bullshit you can put on them for having access to your account.
Lol, sure, you can, I'll gladly give you my password. You know why? Because everything these days have some other ways of authorization; text message on your phone, email and similar. And I'm sure as fuck not gonna give you those.
Not to mention, I'm pretty sure private account info sharing is illegal on some websites.
Some of them do actually. You'd be surprised what desperate people would do for a job.
I'm pretty sure that's illegal to do
At least for now
Some of them do actually. You'd be surprised what desperate people would do for a job.
this is actually illegal to do in the united states (or at least some states)
Yikes. If this comes to pass good thing I don't plan on visiting the US until the clowns have left the circus.
I will never divulge my Facepunch password, but they can have my Twitter.

They can certainly have my facepunch account, they might learn something about efficient shitposting.
what if you dont have social media
What if you can't remember your password?
Like I can't remember most of mine.
what if you dont have social media
Use Tor, most of my traffic is router through it, the sites I don't use tor for are sites that inherently identify me, like social media.
