I've seen a great deal of them, i'll try to list off as many as i can think of. shutter island Pi requiem for a dream black swan the machinist (has a really good trippy tone, the way the film is shot and edited it all seems like a dream world while still seeming vaguely normal) one flew over the cuckoo's nest the shining american psycho donnie darko the fountain (depending upon how you interpret the film there's a possible subplot but it's a really big one) inland empire blue velvet eraserhead mulholland drive lost highway there will be blood [sp]k-pax[/sp] martyrs a serbian film that's probably not even half but if i don't remember them then they're probably worth rewatching if it's been that long
There are a few good modern black and white films that are not about insanity which I've seen, The elephant man and The Artist come to mind. I've heard Brazil is good, but I haven't watched it yet to know how trippy it is.
I haven't seen it, but I've heard that Good Night, and Good Luck is a very good modern black & white movie. Also, the obvious Schindler's List.
fuck i just came back from the video store and forgot to get schindler's list very moving film, the ending made me gush rivers of man tears [sp]iirc all the jews he saved give them all their jewgolds smelted into one gold ring for schindler[/sp] the only thing i don't like about the film is that it's very historically inaccurate. schindler was a crooked man in real life. also from what i hear the elephant man could very well be about insanity, in a sort of subtle way like a subplot. there is insanity in being what society deems as a freak, especially if someone shows you off like a lion at the zoo. i meant to put it up there but it was my intention of renting it, turns out they didn't stock it.
Roman Polaski's Apartment trilogy, they are pretty much all about insanity (well, you find out at the end). The films are Rosemary's Baby, the Tenant and Repulsion.
Control is a black and white film about the singer of the band Joy Division who was known for being depressed and hanging himself. Enter the Void is a pretty damn trippy film. The Man Who Wasn't There is a black and white crime film by the Coen Brothers. Altered States will probably be up your alley. The Madness of King George is based on the true story of King George III of England who was indeed quite mad. The Aviator is based on the life of Howard Hughes who had severe OCD. [editline]6th January 2012[/editline] My Winnipeg is made by Canadian filmmaker Guy Madden and showing his love for old movies, the film is in the style of one and is does have a very dream-like atmosphere. [editline]6th January 2012[/editline] 8 1/2, a movie about a film director who has run out of ideas, is in black and white and kind of trippy seeing as how much of the movie takes place in the protagonist's head. like look at this opening scene: it's great
The trippiest movies I've ever seen were El Topo and The Holy Mountain by Alejandro Jodorowsky. They're not about insanity, but they feel completely insane.
sounds good i'll have a look
Enter the Void is a pretty damn trippy film.
don't even get me started on this one, it's my all time favorite by really far. it did things you never see in film, and one thing after another just gushes out at you. enter the void is a fucking river of highly inspired genius and vast knowledge and adeptness in using every single trippy/out-there/fucked-up/etc fucking gimmick in the book. it's a long one for sure but if you get high before it'll go by SO fast
The Man Who Wasn't There is a black and white crime film by the Coen Brothers.
i'll check it out, it's weird i haven't already cause i like the coen bros
Altered States will probably be up your alley.
seen it, loved it. turns out i saw it when i was really really young, like a half step before toddler.
The Madness of King George is based on the true story of King George III of England who was indeed quite mad.
you can't just have a bunch of trippy shit, you need context or else the trippy shit is all you have and it becomes mundane after a while.
Well it was all meant to be metaphorical and sometimes satirical, but I see your point. You might like El Topo better, it's a western and has an (interesting to me) plot.

Plus I heard he's got OCD as well. Plus he's just a damn good actor.
Has OP by any chance seen Memento? It's kind of about insanity..
You could watch Dead Man by Jim Jarmusch. It's in Black and White and a little bit insane. I don't know if this falls under your definition of trippy but the theme is pretty cool too

Didn't realize that Neil Young did Dead Man's soundtrack.
Has OP by any chance seen Memento? It's kind of about insanity..
I wouldn't say it's about insanity, but I would say that its trippy. [editline]8th January 2012[/editline] The Good German is a good modern black and white film.
idk in fight club he was kinda insane
fight club [sp]was about insanity, slathered all over with it[/sp] but really i dunno how you could be one of the few people who loves movies who hasn't seen it. and it's not exactly a main point either anyways, it's more of a subplot (in a strange way because the entire movie wouldn't have happened without it). what you're really supposed to take from the film is that a healthy life maintains a good balance of conformity and thinking for yourself. memento is about insanity in the same way irreversible is. vengance and obsession so extreme it pushes the characters over the edge [sp]except in memento you don't actually see him initially go over the edge, you're just sure he's already taken the leap off of it god knows who long ago. iirc he burns stuff and in burning that stuff you realize he's like a serial killer and has been killing "john g" for a very long time[/sp]
Modern b+w? Bela Tarr is your man. Check out Werkmeister Harmonies. also watch the White Ribbon by Michael Haneke.
i can't believe anyone didn't put following up yet it's on netflix instant too i think.
Stalker (1979) ? i guess you could say its about insanity but in a different way
Stalker? Insanity? How?
Stalker? Insanity? How?
The Zone, man
The Zone, man
How's that about insanity? Some weird shit happens there and at one point something even physically happens to one of the men.
actually it's sort of spacial induced insanity. both by the zone itself inducing insanity and by being in such a place. i mean the ground turned fucking molten just out of nowhere. that's gotta cause stress. but not about insanity, more of a subplot. not really insanity either. there's a word for it but i can't remember it.
Ed Wood is fantastic little movie about director Ed Wood, the man who made what is seen as the worst movie of all time "Plan 9from Outer Space" Its one of Tim Burton's best actually back when he was good.
