Johannesburg (AFP) - The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela's memorial ceremony denied he was a fraud Thursday, claiming he gesticulated nonsense during the service because he was suffering a schizophrenic episode and hallucinating.Thamsanqa Jantjie has been branded a fraud by members of South Africa's deaf community, who said his signing for US President Barack Obama and other world leaders amounted to little more than "flapping his arms around."
Jantjie on Thursday insisted he was a qualified signer, but said his behaviour was down to a sudden attack of schizophrenia, for which he takes medication.
"There was nothing I could do. I was alone in a very dangerous situation," he told Johannesburg daily The Star, adding that he was hearing voices and hallucinating.
"I tried to control myself and not show the world what was going on. I am very sorry. It's the situation I found myself in," he added.
But Jantjie's explanation appeared to raise as many questions as answers.
South Africa's deaf organisations rubbished the suggestion that this was a one-off problem, claiming they had complained to the government before about Jantjie.
Footage has emerged showing him signing for President Jacob Zuma at the ruling ANC party's 100th anniversary celebrations in 2012.
Security concerns
The South African government on Thursday admitted a "there might be a mistake, where other people might not have understood the interpreter," acknowledging that Jantjie was "not a professional sign language interpreter."
"But I don't think he was picked up from the street," said Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, deputy minister for women, children and persons with disabilities, stating that he may have had problems with English or been tired.
Bogopane-Zulu also admitted that the government could not track down the company Jantjie worked for.
"We spoke to them wanting some answers and they vanished into thin air," she said.
"It looks like they have been cheating all along."
The revelations also raise questions about how Jantjie, who was at one point little more than an arm's length away from Obama and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, was vetted and received security clearance.
Thamsanqa Jantjie said Thursday that he is a fully qualified interpreter and has been trusted in the past with other big events.
"It has been many years I have been doing this job" he told CNN. "My portfolio shows that I have been a champion of what I have been doing."
Not so, says the head of the South Africa Translators' Institute.
And absolutely no one called him out on it until he was signing for an international event?
If this is legit, I hope he can find the support he needs.
I find it kind of annoying that the deaf community 'rubbished the suggestion' and call him a fraud, as they too suffer a crippling disability that they can't do anything about. If anything they should be compassionate towards his plight.
If it's not legit, there should have been more checks carried out into his legitimacy. Otherwise it's kind of a massively successful troll on the guy's part.
Seeing as he's signed before, however (which they complained about) something tells me he might actually be telling the truth.
Lies, those were all gang signs.
I believe that the South African Deaf Community has conspired to bring down this poor legitimate interpreter in the name of Satan.
Bullshit he was summoning cthulhu
This is currently my favorite news story.
I feel like we are watching a South African version of Doctor Who, this guy has saved earth many times before and some how he has done it again, he is just using the being crazy thing as a fake background for saving the human race from eternal inferno.
In my view, he is a champion. He has managed to fool the Government for aggeeessss that he can actually sign. While it sucks for the deaf community, I find it hilarious that no one did anything about it until now.
DSP fucks everything up
That's fucking bullshit how was I suppose to know how to sign? this game's broken.
So in the years that he was faking it, it never occurred to him to actually learn how to sign? Fucking idiot. And now he's probably going to get fucked over for falsely claiming mental illness. (Assuming he's actually lying, obviously)

Yeah, I'm surprised the deaf-mutes didn't speak up about this. I mean, the signs were all there, why did no one hear the complaints?

Giving kudos for 'fooling' the government is implying governments are smart to begin with :v:
Why does everyone assume he is lying about his reasoning? Faking being an interpreter this high up is very difficult.
When he told them all he could hear voices though, all the deaf people said "YEAH, STOP RUBBING IT IN!"
The Yankees should hire him as a first base coach.
