• Semen secrets: how a previous sexual partner can influence another male’s offspring
What if that sexual partner you'd rather forget remained forever a part of your life?Sydney scientists have shown for the first time that offspring can resemble their mother's previous sexual partner – in flies, at least. The research team, led by evolutionary ecologist Angela Crean, propose that sperm from a previous partner can penetrate a developing egg, influencing its growth despite being sired by another male. Dr Crean said her team were shocked when their experiments revealed they had discovered a new form of non-genetic inheritance. "We did a lot of follow-up studies to check our results," she said. First proposed in ancient Greece, the idea that offspring can inherit characteristics from their mother's previous mate – known as telegony – was discredited when scientists established more than a century ago that genes were the dominant way traits passed from parent to offspring. "Before we discovered genetics it was widely believed that [telegony] occurred, and it was even spoken about by Darwin in The Origin of Species," Dr Crean, from the University of NSW, said. "But once we figured out genetics, it didn't make sense under than mechanism, so it was just dismissed." But more recently other forms of non-genetic inheritance have been observed, including work by Dr Crean which found a father's environment could influence the size of their offspring. For instance, flies fed a nutrient-rich diet as maggots grew into bigger insects and then passed this condition onto their offspring. To test it out, UNSW Australia scientists Dr Angela Crean, Professor Russell Bonduriansky and Dr Anna Kopps manipulated the size of male flies and studied their offspring. They found that the size of the young was determined by the size of the first male the mother mated with, rather than the second male that sired the offspring. “Our discovery complicates our entire view of how variation is transmitted across generations, but also opens up exciting new possibilities and avenues of research. Just as we think we have things figured out, nature throws us a curve ball and shows us how much we still have to learn,” says lead author Dr Crean. The researchers propose that the effect is due to molecules in the seminal fluid of the first mate being absorbed by the female’s immature eggs and then influencing the growth of offspring of a subsequent mate. The study is published in the journal Ecology Letters. before anyone freaks the fuck out and maury gets a new season, keep in mind that this only applies to FLIES
i wonder who decided the right job for them is to watch flies bang also i thought sperm couldnt last long outside of the weiner
i wonder who decided the right job for them is to watch flies bang
I accidentally murdered two bees having sex once.
before anyone freaks the fuck out and maury gets a new season, keep in mind that this only applies to FLIES
Is only proven to apply to flies. The implication is that if it works for flies it might work for humans as well. [editline]3rd October 2014[/editline] And I for one honestly don't really care all that much. If I am going to have a child, I don't expect it to be my clone or anything like that, so while it's kinda funky for sure, it definitely wouldn't turn me away from a "tainted" woman just because there's a chance the kid's to a high degree random appearance might be influenced by somebody else.
Fuck this, if this is true then my wife is going to have to be a virgin. I'm not going to let anyone else except me and my wife 'influence' our children. wtf
Fuck this, if this is true then my wife is going to have to be a virgin. I'm not going to let anyone else except me and my wife 'influence' my children. wtf
hello /r9k/
Fuck this, if this is true then my wife is going to have to be a virgin. I'm not going to let anyone else except me and my wife 'influence' my children. wtf
I will sleep with your wife
hello /r9k/
Typing r9k in Google said something about it being a misogynistic board on 4chan How is what I said misogynisitc?
Fuck this, if this is true then my wife is going to have to be a virgin. I'm not going to let anyone else except me and my wife 'influence' my children. wtf
I think it reinforces the belief that these religious scriptures knew a lot about these subjects but with a lack of ability to explain with hard evidence or to masses; for example one article states: Ancient Greece proposed the idea that offspring can inherit characteristics from their mother's previous mate – known as telegony - which no doubt coined the birth of sex after marriage and was adopted by plentiful of religious books (among other laws, rules and guide-lines). Comes as no surprise I suppose that ancient philosophies blanketed their sophistication into religious ritual for the common man to appreciate - it is a crude but effective manual for a society. Why else do the Qu'ran, Torah and Bible talk about banking, basic law and economics along with hygiene and avoidance of certain meats? Its as if the people who made it were trying to make a "functional society for dummies" handbook. You're going to be hard pressed to find a virgin in this day and age though m8, unless you just marry yourself.
Don't ruin this. I still can't get over losing camiib
You're going to be hard pressed to find a virgin in this day and age though m8, unless you just marry yourself.
It's not as hard as you think. The easiest way is to convert to Mormonism and move to Utah.
Fuck this, if this is true then my wife is going to have to be a virgin. I'm not going to let anyone else except me and my wife 'influence' our children. wtf
except for everything else in the outside world that isn't you and your future wife that will affect your children anyway
Fuck this, if this is true then my wife is going to have to be a virgin. I'm not going to let anyone else except me and my wife 'influence' our children. wtf
If it calms you down I really think you won't have to worry about this.
Typing r9k in Google said something about it being a misogynistic board on 4chan How is what I said misogynisitc?
"I WILL ONLY MARRY A VIRGIN" doesn't sound misogynistic in the slightest to you?
Kinda sounds a bit bullshitish, they say the seminal fluid is affecting the female undeveloped eggs, but in most animals the undeveloped eggs are nowhere near where the action happens. Also they cite one study that observed size variation in flies, nothing else but size was tested [editline]3rd October 2014[/editline] Unless I'm confusing undeveloped eggs with unfertalised eggs
"I WILL ONLY MARRY A VIRGIN" doesn't sound misogynistic in the slightest to you?
It's not misogynistic if you're a practicing Catholic who believes in sex after marriage.
"I WILL ONLY MARRY A VIRGIN" doesn't sound misogynistic in the slightest to you?
It's kind of an odd expectation in this day and age, but what is misogynistic about it?
"I WILL ONLY MARRY A VIRGIN" doesn't sound misogynistic in the slightest to you?
There' something woman hating about wanting to be with a woman who isn't sexually experienced? Come on now.
It's kind of an odd expectation in this day and age, but what is misogynistic about it?
it plays into the age-old idea that a woman must be pure or else she's undesirable
It's not misogynistic if you're a practicing Catholic who believes in sex after marriage.
I can't see how it is misogynistic even if you are not religious.. it's a preference like for any other personality trait, there's plenty people who it bothers and plenty who it doesn't, why make such a big deal?
For instance, flies fed a nutrient-rich diet as maggots grew into bigger insects and then passed this condition onto their offspring.
"So what do we feed them to test this theory?" "Only the finest decaying flesh my good man."
"I WILL ONLY MARRY A VIRGIN" doesn't sound misogynistic in the slightest to you?
that term has been coined so much it's become a pretty hollow and unfittingly used term
So many people are going to misconstrue this data and apply it to so many things outside the realms of likely hood.
I think it's sexist to expect a woman to be a virgin if you yourself are not a virgin. If you're a virgin, and want another virgin, that to me is more understandable. I also don't consider virginity a personality trait.
I think it's sexist to expect a woman to be a virgin if you yourself are not a virgin.
It's not sexist just hypocritical.
It's not sexist just hypocritical.
Well, the reasoning behind it is what can be sexist. I know a girl who happens to have a fetish for virgins. I don't consider that sexist, because she's not seeking men out who are "untainted" and "pure." Women have had to deal with this idea that their worth is based on their virginity. That having sex, unlike a guy having sex, "taints" them. Entire businesses are built around restoring hymens and checking for virginity. I guess it's not the preference that I think is sexist, but the reasoning behind that preference for virginity might be.
I know a girl who happens to have a fetish for virgins. I don't consider that sexist, because she's not seeking men out who are "untainted" and "pure."
So you can accept a non-virgin guy who seeks virgin girls as long as it's not because of "untainted-ness" or "pureness"?
So you can accept a non-virgin guy who seeks virgin girls as long as it's not because of "untainted-ness" or "pureness"?
Honestly? Yes. Because he's not considering the girl trash as soon as he's done with her. This is assuming they're having sex. Like I guess I'm talking about people who are already sexist being hypocritical. And another edit: I guess in a country like America, it's probably not so much sexism as being shitty.
Honestly? Yes. Because he's not considering the girl trash as soon as he's done with her. This is assuming they're having sex.
Hard to imagine anyone with that attitude towards human sexuality. But I know they exist, which is sad.
