• Being naked: Shouldn't be a social taboo?

! Wall of Text warning ! Nutshell version of this post for everyone: Yeah, it's cold out right now. But if people wanna be nude, we should let 'em, and acting like a naked body is disgusting, or makes us uncomfortable, is an artifact of Edwardian-era virtues and pointless religious rules. If we let people streak without repercussion, perhaps there wouldn't be so much obsession with having "perfect people" because everyone's gotten used to all varieties of naked bodies. Yes or no? EDIT: And since barely anyone's reading the bottom paragraphs, I'm not saying "go completely naked", and I already conceded that clothes still have practicality. This is more to do with our social behaviour. I don't reckon people should be so picky about naked people. As for those saying "ERECTIONS IN PUBLIC"... the point is, if it was never taboo, this wouldn't be a problem. Oh, and the people saying "SEXUAL ATTACKS"... clothes or not, that happens, sadly. And it's easier to hit your attacker where it hurts if nobody's wearing layer upon layer of clothing. Okay, so I created this thread-cum-essay (hahaha, 'cum') to ask all of you on Facepunch a simple question: "If you were allowed, would you be naked all the time?" That question could sound a little weird to people. Some will answer "yes" gleefully. Others will say "no" uncomfortably. Some will shrug. Many will call it an "inappropriate question" - either because they believe that themselves, or because they're afraid to give a public answer truthfully. Some will giggle at the idea of getting to swing their junk around in public. The latter are the best kind of people, by the way. The fact that society as a whole is obsessed with "dressing appropriately" makes no sense to me, once I think about it. Why is there this pointless taboo, when it comes to nakedness? Why do we condemn people into smothering their skin in artificial fabrics? The idea of wearing clothes originated roughly 107,000 years ago - which is pretty recent in the historical timeline of mankind. Wikipedia says that "the earliest clothing likely consisted of fur, leather, leaves or grass which were draped, wrapped or tied around the body. The invention of clothing may have coincided with the northward migration of modern Homo sapiens away from the warm climate of Africa." Back then, clothing had a purely functional existance... to protect the newly emerging northern civilizations of the world from the colder, wetter weather of the northern hemisphere. Yet, in 2010, we've had this big fad of streaking in the snow, in the UK at least (I fuckin' love Front ) - and clothing's becoming of less and less functional value. We don't need them, in our air-conditioned buildings and cars. Not in developed countries. In the poorest of countries, they have little clothing to wear anyway, or have no real reason to be wearing it all - look at all the Christian Africans, who wear big robes n' shit, because their religion predisposes they hide their body. Incomprehensible and illogical in the sweltering heat of a close-to-the-hemisphere summer. Now we wear clothes like a peacock wears its feathers. In the past few centuries, wearing clothes became a virtue backed by religions, and being naked became a social taboo... not because it was detrimental to survival in the cold weather, but because it was now a sin to show your skin. During the time the British empire existed, we spread the "cover thyself" rule to warm climates which it didn't apply to. These 'naked protests' cropping up in developed countries everywhere in the past few years make me ask myself: "Would life be better, without clothes?" I'm not asking whether we'd have a better civilisation if we banned clothes - they're still there to protect us from the elements - but asking whether life would be better if people didn't look down at nakedness like it was something bad, something immoral. Without clothes covering us up: -Would people be more confident about their body? -Would we be less judgemental to one other? -Would we RESPECT one another more? (How can someone even think of sexually harassing someone else, when being naked is the norm? "Yeah, well done, you grabbed my ass. Since your penis is exposed too, I could slice it off right now.") -Would we have more money in pocket (well, sock), to spend on other things? -Would we be more spiritual and less material? -Would we be more human? -Would people have a better idea of what "real beauty" is, being exposed to so many different shapes and sizes of body every day? -Would we have less reliance on crops and oil? (Think about how big the globalized fashion industry is... that's a lot of wools,fabrics,cottons,leathers,synthetics... being used up at an amazing rate and rarely reused. I haven't researched this theory to see whether I'm right, so go ahead and shoot me down, but I reckon I could be onto something here. Stripping for moral purposes.) Not that I'm bashing clothes... or fashion. Humans will always judge each other based on mutual appearances, and the clothes you wear, the style you develop, can help you express who you are. It lets the inner artisté in you out... by wearing designer clothes designed by someone else so thousands of people like you can express the same artistic expression at the same time. The one downfall of not wearing clothes is... where do you carry things? The answer? You can still WEAR clothes if you want, dummy. So go ahead and strip into the nude, still with your fanny-packs, beer-hats and shoes full of money. If you had the choice, would you go starkers? Would you be cool with everyone else going starkers, too? At the end of the day, a nipple is a nipple, an ass is an ass (no matter how hairy), breasts are the immaculate creation of some otherworldly God. Humans have 'em, why do we hide 'em? I say it's time we quit making phallic symbols out of everything and make the phallus the symbol again! What do YOU think, Facepunch? TRIVIA: I actually wrote this for the Facebook group I started for it, and to make it thread-worthy I had to replace the words 'book' and 'group' with 'punch' and 'thread'. Hard work.
oh god do not want
I'd wear clothes even if being naked was allowed
I might wear abit less...
Dude, it's fucking cold outside. Interesting point though. It's way too far from our social norms for it to happen anytime soon, even if everyone agreed (which they almost certainly won't).
I like my clothes. My trilby, my greatcoat, my shoes and my leather gloves. It's a me.
-Would we have more money in pocket (well, sock), to spend on other things?
This is also a good point. I keep all sorts of stuff in my jeans / jacket pockets. Would be a ballache to do without.
There are a lot of ugly people out there that NO ONE wants to see naked. :|

If it were allowed i'd first see how the rest of the world is taking it, if more and more people start going naked to school/work and such i might join it.
Think of all the nice women :smug:
Most of the 'nice women' strip off anyway..
Well according to Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory it all started with Greek mythology. Everyone was naked, shit always got sad.
Yeah but think of the older ones. :ohdear:
I would invent high-tech sunglasses that censor women older than 25 and younger than 18
Dress sense is what makes most people unique.
yes it should fag (User was banned for this post ("gay/faggot as a derogatory" - Lithifold))
Probably not, since it would cause an unneeded errection in public AND it also keeps us warm
WE HAVE TO PROTECT THE CHILDREN /caps
Ever heard of a thing called hygiene?
Well, just imagine. you're talking to some friends, drinking a cup of tea at the local coffee shop. Everything's going fine, until suddenly some big, fat monster of a man comes in, hair hanging everywhere, flapping his dick around as he tries to get to the front and order his pastry. is that good? HUH? IS IT?
The sluts would go around naked and so it would be easier to tell them apart from people who aren't sluts.
OP just wants to see titties
I would invent high-tech sunglasses that censor women older than 25
Fix'd
Fix'd
Hurf durf paedophilia is funni.
I'd wear clothes because I feel better like that but I can't stand how being naked in public is illegal. Hurts my perception of personal freedom.
I wonder... where would you keep your wallet, car-keys and phone if you're naked? In the ass?
