[release]A farm worker in northern Guatemala has told how he managed to survive a gruesome massacre at the hands of a suspected Mexican drugs cartel.
The man said armed men arrived at his ranch in Peten province on Saturday demanding to see the landowner.
When workers refused to co-operate the gangsters bound their hands and started hacking at them with machetes.
Many of the 27 victims were decapitated but the farm worker says he survived by playing dead.
He lay in the grass until the gang had gone and was found by police who arrived at the scene on Sunday morning.
"I thank God I am still alive," the man told AFP news agency. He has not been named for security reasons.
"I played dead when they stabbed me in the stomach. Then I hid and left at around 5am and I came across a pile of human heads," he said.
The man is now under armed guard while being treated at a hospital.
The ranch is close to Guatemala's border with Mexico.
The attackers are thought to be members of the powerful Zetas drugs cartel, the authorities say.
Police said the killings could be linked to a battle between drug gangs fighting for control of the area.
They say there are also suspicions the massacre could be linked to the murder of Haroldo Waldemar Leon - the brother of an alleged Guatemalan drugs boss - who was shot in the same area on Saturday.
Guatemala President Alvaro Colom, who flew to Peten on Monday, condemned the killings.
"This is a barbarity," he said. "We will get them even if they are hiding in their lair. We will get them."
Mexican cartels are increasingly moving into northern Guatemala, an important transit point for drugs smuggled from South America to the US.
Guatemalan law enforcement officials say the gang has increasingly moved its operations south since Mexican President Felipe Calderon stepped up his country's fight against the drugs trade.[/release]
Like I always say. These guys have the same operating capability as Taliban and Al Qaeda and these guys are just south of the border for us while we're throwing soldiers half a world away.
It's about time the US steps in, this shit has gone on far enough.

Because we're doing so well in the Middle East.
except this is something else
and its on our border
Mexico just can't get it's shit together.
Its amazing and sad Mexico can be this bad for how advanced they are. This seems like the stuff you would hear about in a 3rd world country.
This makes me really wonder, if Spain and Portugal had done a better job at treating their colonies as colonies instead of just milking money from them, if a better government would've been instated in central and south America which would've prevented this.
This kind of stuff happens when you rule over a place for 300 years without any representation from them, then just giving them all the power over the course of a few years.

Are you crazy?
Great Britain did a shitty job treating their colonies. America was born.
That's a horrifying analogy.
Great Britain was pretty good with their colonies, but that was because we were direct descendants.
We still treated native americans shittily.
In Mexico, a lot of the people were native americans, so they were always treated shittily.
Plus Spain started declining around that period.
except this is something else

We can't even handle our OWN war on drugs, let alone someone else's.
Mexico has no oil, why should US interfere?

The list of who treated their colonies the best goes (top being nicest, bottom being worst):
Sweden
Russia
France
Holland
Germany
Italy
Britain
Portugal
Belgium
Spain
Mexico has no oil, why should US interfere?
What?
That's idiotic to say considering one major event in Mexico's history was nationalizing the oil industry.
Holy fuck, why waste money on the drug war, when we can go to war with these fuckers directly.
Mexico sounds like a really shit-filled place.
Probably due to the media never writing anything good about it though.
Mexico is an awesome country, it's sad that there is so much bullshit going on there. This whole drug war has gone too far though, something should be done.

Technically this is part of the drug war, the Cartel's essentially control the drugs trade
We are not, I repeat, NOT going to launch an invasion of Mexico.
That would be a PR nightmare.
DECLARE DRUGS ILLEGAL
OPEN UP MASSIVE BLACK MARKET FOR DRUGS WITH MASSIVE PROFITS
LET CRIMINAL CARTELS TAP THE BLACK MARKET AND GAIN MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF MONEY
uhhhhhhhhh oops
This reminds me of zombie farm.
"You have defeated Mcdonald and his farmhands, he'll be back though."
that's pretty hardcore to say at least
Interfere? Whoever suggests this is a moron. They have interfered, and guess what, they're relocating to southern Mexico and Columbia to evade authorities. They'll just keep moving to the least militarized area and in the process many people will be killed, innocents and gangsters alike, many civil rights destroyed and so on. You know what would really help? fucking legalizing drugs.
There's a lot of people on here who many not have read about America's prohibition but if you advocate anything other than legalization you are very literally allowing history to repeat itself in a very stupid manner.

Theres a difference between fighting someone who is radicalized and fighting someone who's looking for their next paycheck.

America doesn't have a good tract record in Latin america, or anywhere in fact.
It's about time the US steps in, this shit has gone on far enough.
The US knows the only way to end this is by legalising drugs, but they won't. So no, the US won't step in, at most it'll send in some half assed response and do fuckall.

Ending the drug war would, in itself, go after these people more then any police/military action.
Fucking primitive. Truly a pathetic reality of the human race.
I think the drugs cartels might be as worse as the taliban for example, wasn't a soccer match shot up/bus hijacked and slaughtered like last week? Just like in every conflict the cilivian is the biggest loser.

What once was a Amazing country for tourism is now a country about death and drugs. How sad.
I don't even know why the goverment is opposing legalizing some milder drugs. They get to hurt the cartels at their core, and they get free tax money.
