WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Americans strongly oppose U.S. intervention in Syria's civil war and believe Washington should stay out of the conflict even if reports that Syria's government used deadly chemicals to attack civilians are confirmed, a Reuters/Ipsos poll says.About 60 percent of Americans surveyed said the United States should not intervene in Syria's civil war, while just 9 percent thought President Barack Obama should act.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, taken August 19-23, found that 25 percent of Americans would support U.S. intervention if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces used chemicals to attack civilians, while 46 percent would oppose it. That represented a decline in backing for U.S. action since August 13, when Reuters/Ipsos tracking polls found that 30.2 percent of Americans supported intervention in Syria if chemicals had been used, while 41.6 percent did not.
We shouldn't. There's no happy end to this, but I feel like the best ending is Assad maintaining control, or a coalition forming that enshrines secularism.
Who the fuck am I kidding?
If I get sent to Syria I'm going to be so god damn mad.
The poll ended the day of the attack in Damascus, and the day before the media mentioned said attack..
Is it fair to call it current?

The attack took place on the 21st, so it's a good point you bring up that the poll wasn't started after the attack it wasn't completed before them either.

If you or anyone get sent to Syria, I'll be mad with you.
fuck yeah fuck those soviets
And the other 91% said no for good reason.
The public is sick of war and hearing about it. We've had our hands in other peoples shit for 10 years straight at least.
lets go intervene in a conflict that isnt relevant to us, or even affects us.
sounds like a plan
It's a lose lose situation for the American intervention in Syria.
If American intervenes, it's not only "too little too late", but it also costs Americans tax dollars when it's needed elsewhere.
If American doesn't intervene, then it makes the US look weak. Why "draw a red line", if it has no implications? Chemical weapons are illegal by international law, where's the "big stick" after you've spoken softly?
Etc.
Nobody wants another world police, America shouldn't step in

Libya turned out ok I think at least.
It's a hard call though because it seems pretty unlikely that outside intervention would improve the situation now. Frankly it seems rather late for action anyway.
Unless Assad attacks American soil, that's the only way I can see that justified

lol america is 70 trillion in debt do you think they really care about this

We should think about why 91% said no and 9% said yes in a non-time sensitive fashion as well.

Libya started before Syria, and a lot of the military didn't like their leader anyway so that's why there was more force to it, whereas Syria is way different and everyone is power thirsty
Ok let's spend more money and lives while we're about to hit the debt ceiling again

Does Syria have oil or something
-snip for top secret mission-
How about a no fly zone and tons of cruise missiles? Not a boot on the ground. Would not garner more support?
There is much more of a just cause for intervening now than we had for Iraq/Afghanistan but I mean we're already trillions in debt. It shouldn't be only the United States dealing with the situation in Syria. We should form a coalition that'll help out.
b-but we're the world police!
Can't we make it better?!??!?!
One of my friends is getting deployed to Syria soon. He's in the army special forces and he said they're supposed to "find their chemicals weapons and take them"
Thanks for the top secret mission info
Watch the government do it anyways because the government doesn't care what the people want.
but we have to saaaaaave themmm
They'll 'liberate' Syria anyway because they're a bunch of little manchild shits.

The US has had it's hand in other people's shit for more than 60 years now. If I were that old I'd be a fair bit more than just sick of war.

I'm going to take a guess and say he's fucking with you.

10 years is all? We've had a huge hand in international politics and war since the start of the cold war.
Ninja'd, but yeah. The US has been a superpower (as in a major entity or main entity in a large portion of international politics.) (as of now possibly a declining superpower?) for quite a while.

Government based on a what they called democracy 200 years ago (with a few major revisions) is what passes for a modern government. Ofcourse, the flaws of it are really just apathy corruption, and need for resources. But I hope we find a better system than rampant (over)consumerism, apathy, and corruption. We'll see.
Well the United States has to step in when everyone else would rather stand back and let them tear themselves apart. Not saying my country does EVERYTHING right, but when they are using chemical weapons against their own people, how can you say its so wrong to step in?
So happy to see that the American public is finally getting over the idea that the US can march in and fix every other country's problems.
