I can't exactly remember the reason why he doesn't want to take donations, but my guess is that he doesn't want its users to feel worried that he's holding the website hostage for a ransom, or that he doesn't want to feel too indebted to people donating ridiculous sums, or he doesn't want to make people believe that he's running the site for a profit.
