So i came home today after class, went to my computer. i noticed that my mouse was on the ground...i thought that was rather odd, and with further investigation my xbox was missing from my desk as well as my pair of wireless headphones. I just got those headphones not even a month ago...saved up for a few months as well as Christmas money, they cost me $180. So called the police, they came in and looked around, even got a forinsics person to come in and dust for prints. I need help soothing my mind, has this happened to any one else? how long did it take to get your shit back? or do you get any re-reimbursement.
I once moved to New York City. We were staying at the Marriott at JFK when this was stolen:

Someone popped the ignition in the van and drove off. Someone called U-Haul a couple days later to report an abandoned trailer. U-Haul informed us they found our van/trailer. It was completely cleaned out. All of our belonging were in that trailer. Lost over $20,000 worth of coins that were in the back as well as my entire computer/tv/xbox/etc. Everything.
You'll get over it.
P.S. Funny story as well... when we eventually moved back to FL we were pulled over by like 6 cops as a felony stop. It turns out the NYPD never reported the car as recovered so when some random cop ran our plates they thought it was stolen still. My mom was driving at that time but we all had a laugh with the cops when it was all over with.
My sister's house was robbed back in the fall.
Thankfully the neighbor caught them in the act and they only made it off with her boyfriend's coin collection and MP3 player (They were trying to make off with the flat screen T.V. among other things). The thing that my sister was most relieved about was they locked the dog in a room instead of hurting her.
Fuck man...
Well the odd part is, im renting the apartement through my school, which rents the apartement out through the apartement itself. So im going to the school in the morning to talk to them about it. We had a room mate recently leave us 3 weeks ago. He just got up and left without even saying anything, didn't even tell the school and to our knowledge he still has the key. So HOPEFULLY we can get something down through the school cause they said they needed to replace the locks. Maybe they can give us money back as compensation
Some bastards living in my dorm used to steal pop-tarts from me all the time. Shit would piss me off. It was almost like they were mocking me by stealing the pop-tarts and not any of the other expensive shit.
only thing ive ever had robbed was when i was at a café waiting for a friend, i went to the bathroom leaving my jacket hanging on the chair
when i got back it was gone. someone must have seen it and hoped it contained my wallet
luckily i never store my keys or wallet in my jacket but i lost a pretty decent ammount of pocket dust
Hahaha, they break into an apartment and all they take is a headset and an xbox?
Terrible criminals.
Anyway, for my robbery story:
Dad and I get home from shopping, we get into the house, and drawers everywhere in the office are open, obviously someone broke in. We tallied what they stole, and it amounted to: my lockbox with ~$100, my sister's small safe that had nothing of monetary value in it, and some jewelery (dunno how valuable, they were my mothers). But the best part is this: They apparently found the safe we keep in our basement. It's a huge safe, and really heavy. Would take at least two people to move it. They must have thought they hit the jackpot, since they manage to drag it up a flight of stairs, and outside.
The fun part? That safe was completely empty. There wasn't a single thing in it. I'm sure they spent hours trying to open it, as well.
So, they passed right by suitcases of thousands of dollars of camera equipment to drag an empty safe up some stairs.
Man, I'm sorry. I was robbed twice in the same house within a two month span, luckily they only dared to go into my dining room to steal a laptop and my mom's purse. They also smashed my car's window, but that wasn't a huge deal.
We never caught the guy or guys, but I'd assume that if you were to catch them (if they got fingerprints, that chance is greater) they'd have to reimburse you in some way. I don't know if insurance plays a role or not either.

Your chance of finding stolen goods is slim to none. The police do the standard printing and whatnot, but all it does is get entered into a database. The minute the database comes up with a few matches for the same set of prints, then a real investigation is started.
It's unfortunate this kind of stuff happens. You notice it happens a lot more around Christmas / winter too. Times are tough. I really can't say I don't feel bad for people who steal to put food on the table, but if you steal just to steal and sell to support your heroin addiction, fuck you.

Time to fill my house with massive empty safes.

Well if its the room mate that i mentioned earlier he is definitely a dick wad. He couldn't afford to buy food for himself, he would eat ours without us knowing and then he showed up one day with a brand new PS3...
Also i had the boxes for the xbox as well as the headphones with their serial numbers...so those are also in the database if they are taken to a pawn shop.
I once got robbed at gun point when i was a teenager.
shat myself, went home, and cried.
and all he stole was 50 quid.
I'm rather surprised that forensic investigators actually showed up. My apparently was also similarly robbed about 8 years ago, but much aggressively as the door lock was completely busted. All the police did was dropped a card and told us to take care after taking a walk around the apartment. Not to mention that they showed up 3 hours after we called them.
And that's why we have a massive alarm system that activates 15 seconds after intrusion.
Makes the robbers shit their pants when they've just spotted the flatscreen TV and then a alarm that's louder than a smoke detector goes off.

I've heard one of those before. It's absolutely fucking terrifying. I was smashed to hell one night, and I tried entering my house....only it was my neighbor's house from down the street. I walk in the back door, and I hear a strange soft beeping noise, and here I'm all like "wtf is that?" Then it fucking blares like a cop siren on steroids, echoing down the whole valley. Needless to say I nearly shat myself and I tripped and stumbled down the street and hid in the bush for a few hours. I could see cops checking by and I finally sobered up and went to my actual house.
I'm amazed I even remember any of that.

We have one too.. I found out, along with my cousin, that 2 minutes will make you feel like you have to vomit, and give you tinnitus rest of the day.
Because we're sharing our stories, I may as well chip in.
No one in my family has ever had their house broken in to, but my older half-brother has had it come close to happening on numerous occasions.
He lives in a particularly bad neighbourhood, if you say to anyone who knows about it "I live in Kurri!" (name of the place) you'll normally be associated to be an absolute derro. It's true though, most people there are. Anyways a few times when I sleep over at his place, my brother's dog has barked her head off. Just like that, in the middle of night. She's normally calm, and will only start barking at those outside when they literally step up onto the balcony (the houses on the street are close together, so there isn't really any way to get around the house to the back). Good thing she has a loud and deep bark as well (she's a fully grown black labrador). I can imagine things would be worse without her.
When I move out soon, I'll probably look into getting a dog myself. Although I'll probably look at relatively nicer neighbourhoods, it wouldn't hurt doing so.

Oh god... im nearly deaf and those hurt my ears so much...
Someone stole my doorbell the other day.
Mother fuckers.
Did you have renter insurance ? it should cover your loss's - i keep recitet / invoice in safe and a copy in my dropbox
You'll get screwed over. My mother had an old "gangster" car, Oldsmobile Cutlass to be exact. So, one night during a server thunderstorm where it was loud enough to cause car alarms to go off, it was stolen. We woke up late because the storm also knocked the power and reset the alarm clocks. My goes outside to find her car stolen. Get this. She called the police and they said they look for it, and paper work, insurance, etc. A month later, they "found" in at either a auto garage or tow shop. Get this, they found it like the next day after it has been reported stolen.
I have a lab and a doberman in my house, bad idea to rob my house. Even if you try to escape that doberman will chase you and you can't outrun a doberman.
Someone stole a pile of gravel from my neighbour once.

Least they didn't take your computer so you could tell us how you got robbed!
A couple of my friends got robbed at gunpoint and had all their consoles stolen a couple of TVs and a laptop but the people that broke in were after a monitor as well which was screwed to the wall when they couldn't get it off they just left it even though the screwdrivers they used to mount it were available, it took the police about 6 months to get everything back so there's a chance your stuff'll come back.
and this is why you get insurance for your stuff.
bad luck though.
