So here in the UK and Commonwealth Nations it's Remembrance Day on the 11/11 and for the US it is known as Veterans Day and can also be known as Armistice Day. In the UK the main day to celebrate this is the second Sunday of November - Remembrance Sunday.
In the UK a 2 minute silence is observed at 11am on 11/11.
Just going to paste the Wikipedia first paragraph to explain to those who don't know.
Remembrance Day – also known as Poppy Day, Armistice Day (the event it commemorates) or Veterans Day – is a day to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War. It is observed on 11 November to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.) The day was specifically dedicated by King George V, on 7 November 1919, to the observance of members of the armed forces who were killed during war; this was possibly done upon the suggestion of Edward George Honey to Wellesley Tudor Pole, who established two ceremonial periods of remembrance based on events in 1917.
A red poppy is usually worn on the chest as a homage to the poppy fields of Flanders.

Personally I never used to understand the full meaning of Remembrance Sunday until a few years ago, I first remember having to stay silent in lessons when I was 5 or 6 in schools, and struggled to keep it quiet, mostly because I was only 5 or 6. I now understand it has much more meaning and needs to be respected, the sheer amount of people who died in the First World War and onwards is something that needs to be remembered and their lives honoured.
Just use this thread as a means to discuss what it means to you, and how you've celebrated it, past and present, but most of all please respect that this day can mean something to many or nothing to all, and if you're here to flame about it, then you have no respect, it's not about why people went to war, or what caused it, it's remembering the fallen.
Disgusting behaviour of Celtic fans on Remembrance Sunday, chanting throughout the minute silence.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Lest we forget.
This is mainly about UK and Commonwealth countries, if anyone has more information about Veterans day or how it is celebrated in your country then please say and i'll add it to the OP.

May their souls rest in peace...
Got my poppy from Tim Horton's today :)
It used to be part of my duty to attend Rememberance services at this time of year, but now I'm no longer required to do it I found myself, last Sunday, standing at the cenotaph in Bristol along with hundreds of other civilians - in the cold, the rain and the wind to remember those that fell.
Ah we were doing war poetry in English. I have a new-found respect, not the soldiers (as that seems to imply that I only respect the soldiers fighting for my country), but all soldiers.
I'm on a firing party which is going to commence with a salute on Wednesday, should be a good go.

Remembrance Day is much more important, Modern Warfare 2 is 1 day before it.

Never forget. For our tommorow they gave their today.
(Attended rememberance sunday as a member of the air training corps)
:patriot:
The Armistice just created WWII. I only remember it for the people who died, the political end to the war was a sham and just created the second world war as Germany was given such an awful deal.
I don't think that the actions of the government was righteous or just I do not support them in anyway, but thats not what rememberance day is about. It's about those soliders who gave their lives fighting for democracy

You forgot the Republic of China (Not the People's Republic)
That's my birthday, yay. :buddy:
Oh, and thanks, FP, for not turning this into a political discussion.
My respect to the fallen and vets. Also to the OP for not making it a political discussion. Too much of that happening lately "i don't respect our troops because they are invading a country over oil".
Never forget. Ever. For they were the men who gave their lives for our today.
I don't care for which side they fought; may they all rest in peace.
I just hope, for once, Facepunch can keep this civil and respectful. If so, perhaps my faith in humanity is not misplaced.

In the UK, wearing a giant red dong is a Veteran's Day custom.
